Memorial Day message from Mayor Ward

Press release from the City of Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Mayor Harvey Ward released the following message today:

It is a challenge each Memorial Day to bring a message worthy of the men and women whose courage and sacrifice we honor. Some things are bigger than words can convey. Laying down your life to protect our nation is one of those things. Mourning a loved one who will never come home is another.

If anything comes close to expressing our full depth of gratitude, it may be this passage written by Eleanor Roosevelt as World War II was coming to an end.

There is only one way in which those of us who live can repay the dead who have given their utmost for the cause of liberty and justice. They died in the hope that, through their sacrifice, an enduring peace would be built and a more just world would emerge for humanity.

Today, as we honor our fallen heroes, I hope you will join me in repaying that debt by continuing to participate in this imperfect but unsurpassed American system so many generations fought and died to defend.

And to all the members of our nation’s armed forces who agree to lay down their lives to guarantee our safety—the daughters and sons, friends, co-workers, classmates and neighbors—I give thanks.

Have a meaningful Memorial Day 2026.

Harvey

  • What does Mayor Ward know about sacrificing anything other than wasting taxpayer money?

  • At least he is honoring our veterans who gave their life for our freedom. And kept that point. Below is a post from a mayor in Minneapolis Minnesota. Read it and give me your thoughts on it.

    MEMORIAL DAY
    MINNEAPOLIS REMEMBERS AND HONORS THOSE
    WHO HAVE SERVED OUR COUNTRY.

Six years ago, George Floyd’s murder forced our city to confront painful truths about race, public safety, and inequality. Every May 25 is a reminder of that grief – and a renewed call to action to keep pursuing the progress this tragedy catalyzed.
We encourage you to gather, be with community, and honor George Floyd’s life.

    • G: My thoughts?

All those veterans rolling in their graves when they forced masks and clot shots on us for the big lie Covid which has a 100% survival rate…they fought for our freedom!

      My body, my choice!

Say no to great reset and global totalitarianism.. say no to vax passports!

God bless America, our veterans, and the US constitution! 🇺🇸

  • The Mayor did pretty good up until the last couple of paragraphs.

“And to all the members of our nation’s armed forces who agree to lay down their lives to guarantee our safety—the daughters and sons, friends, co-workers, classmates and neighbors—I give thanks.”

Memorial Day is not for those “who agree to lay down their lives” – it is for those who DID it. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, not of thanksgiving.

As a retired Marine, I always appreciate when thanks are given to me for my prior service. But please let us keep Memorial Day for those who went before.

    • I don’t think so, but Trump avoided it so it’s difficult to fault Ward unless willing to criticize Trump as well.

      • I agree. There are several past presidents, senators, etc who have never served. There are also several politicians who have served and no regard for their fallen brotherhood. So long as Memorial Day is kept for what it is. A day of remembrance of those soldiers who made a sacrifice for this country.

      • You voted:

Trump is serving now! He’s commander and chief!
        Thank you President Trump!

        DeSantis served too!
        Thank you governor DeSantis!

God bless America and the US constitution!

        • Hate to break the news but he’s not serving.
          He’s being serviced.

          • You voted: Hate to break the news to you because you got TDS bad, but: The President of the United States serves ( this means he is serving ) as the Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. military. This role encompasses all branches, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, and Coast Guard. The President’s authority is established by the U.S. Constitution,…

          • 🤣He’s serving alright.
The problem is, you shouldn’t just cry foul only when your side is losing, the strike zone should be the same for both teams.
