Meridian Behavioral Healthcare employee arrested for allegedly choking six-year-old patient
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Kechedryi Linchanueshawnt Smith, 32, was arrested yesterday and charged with aggravated child abuse after allegedly choking a six-year-old child who was a patient at Meridian Behavioral Healthcare.
At about 10:45 a.m. on October 27, Smith was working as a Mental Health Technician at Meridian Behavioral Healthcare (1541 SW Williston Road) when she allegedly pushed and choked the victim, who was a patient at the facility.
The responding Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy reported that the child had been involved in a dispute with other patients and had been separated from them; however, the child was still upset and reportedly spit on Smith. Smith allegedly push the child to the floor and grabbed his neck with both hands.
Two witnesses reportedly told the deputy that they heard the child coughing in a common area of the unit and saw Smith “standing over” the child. The witnesses reported that the child had multiple bruises and abrasions on his neck, but neither witness saw Smith choking the child. The witnesses said they confronted Smith, who said “I did it” and “Do whatever you need to do.” Smith was reportedly ordered to leave the facility at that point.
The child reportedly told law enforcement that he had been “choked,” but he seemed to be afraid to provide the name of the person who choked him.
A deputy made contact with Smith at her home, and post Miranda, she reportedly said she walked toward the child in an effort to “scare” him, causing him to fall to the floor; she said she “held him to the ground” with one hand on his back but denied placing her hands on his neck.
When asked about the child’s injuries, Smith reportedly said they had been caused by other patients during the earlier altercation, but the deputy reported that Smith later said that she had not previously noticed any injuries on the child. Smith reportedly said she was “stressed” and that she “lost control.”
The deputy reported that video surveillance showed the child walking toward Smith, who was sitting in a chair. As the child approached Smith, Smith allegedly raised a leg and put her foot on the child’s chest, pushing him away; the child reportedly responded by spitting on Smith, and she allegedly jumped to her feet and chased the child across the day room. The child reportedly fled into a corner and dove to the floor; Smith allegedly knelt above him before moving her hands toward his neck, out of view of the camera.
The deputy reported that the child’s injuries are consistent with hands being placed on his neck to choke him.
Smith reportedly denied choking and kicking the child, but when she was shown the video, she reportedly admitted using her foot to “create distance” between herself and the child.
The deputy concluded that Smith’s actions could reasonably be expected to injure the child and were not based on accepted best practices in restraining patients in a facility like Meridian.
Smith has been charged with aggravated child abuse. She has no criminal convictions; she was arrested in February 2023 for stabbing a man with a steak knife, but the charge was dropped about a month later. Judge Meshon Rawls ordered her held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold her without bail until trial.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Well….there you have it….looks like the inmates are running the asylum.
Isn’t spitting on someone a charge? Smfh
Correct so a child can effortless spit and hurt other children? And nothing is done
Not when it’s a child. Especially a child with developmental disabilities. Are you that dense?
I would loveeeee to see how you would have handled that situation if you was her. “Children” these days are basically adults with their actions.
Now how would you have dealt with getting spit on while witnessing this child being separated from a previous situation. You’re Doing your job, you get spit on…ACTION!! Now what you gonna do?
Well, I’m not going to choke the child… If you can’t manage your temper, you step out and ask for help.
I’m sure every parent whose child is hospitalized for mental illness is reassured to know that you think it’s fine for staff to physically attack that child if they act out (which is likely why they’re in a mental health unit).
Trying to justify physically retaliating against mentally ill 6 year olds now are we? No one is charging a six year old for anything. The lack of accountability in this community never ceases to amaze me.
You’re an idiot!!
Linchanueshawnt? Lin-Shaw-Nay-Shawnt? Seriously?
I can hear kindergarten teachers trying to pronounce a name like that to the other kids, since now teachers must have parental permission to shorten or give nick-names in class.
With a name like that, her “parents” need some counseling! I feel sorry for her…
And both y’all the reasons whyyyy when we get out birth names we MAKE SURE PEOPLE LIKE YALL CAN SAY THEM CORRECTLY. Cause you’re just as childish making fun of someone’s name.
Old Bag Ladyyyy
A teacher might have to learn 120 new names a year. It is inconsiderate to expect people to remember something as difficult as that one. It would be childish to make fun of a more common name like Willy. Something as outlandish as Ms Smith’s name probably contributed to her problems with anger management and is funny.
Please go away
Giving her that name was child abuse.
Stabbing somebody with a steak knife is NOT a behavioral technique which should be characteristic of somebody who works with children who already have issues.
Yeah, how in the world was she hired as a Mental Health Technician…?
DIE, oops, DEI
I think that is a name and not an official certification. On the level of a maintenance technician (janitor before PC).
You are speaking on an allegation that she was NEVER charged with. Please stop creating your own narrative!
Lmaoooo all the crazy women and men work at MERIDIAN…..that’s where all the ex-Tacachale workers are now employed. It’s sad, if you don’t have a heart for these people YOU applied to work for just STOP! Stop the abuse. Stop.
Please, court ordered mental health confinement for this lady. Her next victim may not survive. Blood on your hands judges.
Dat ain’t your kid Kechedryi. Not the first time shes done that. Has anyone axed why there is a 6 year old there? Guess it does start at a young age. Now this kid will go choke someone.
Shouldn’t there be some punctuation in there? A period, or comma at the very least.
Good heavens, WTF work in a place where you can’t take the heat? I guess she can go back to flipping burgers at least.
The top salaries offered to Administration members enable them to distance themselves from their duties. As a result, they express regret over their struggle to attract highly skilled individuals willing to work within the existing salary bracket. Does this situation sound familiar in our County? Poor recruitment choices will undoubtedly result in significant repercussions.
Kechedryi Linchanueshawnt? What do these people’s parents do? Just throw out letters from a Scrabble game and call it a name? SMH
Do not judge unless you have walked in someone shoes. It is easy to criticize a situation in which you have no idea. Am I saying everything that happened was right no. But people are so easy to jump to conclusions and be so judgmental.
How on earth do these people get hired? Monster.
