Staff report
ARCHER, Fla. – A 44-year-old Morriston man was killed early this morning when his motorcycle hit a deer south of Archer.
According to a release from the Florida Highway Patrol, the motorcycle was traveling north on CR 241, north of SW 183rd Avenue, at about 5:08 a.m. this morning when it hit a deer, ejecting the rider onto the grass shoulder of the road. The man was transported to UF Health Shands, where he was pronounced deceased. The report does not state whether he was wearing a helmet.
Very sad. Deer are a known hazard, driving on the rural roads in the dark, especially for motorcycle riders, who have no protection in a crash. The helmet and seatbelt mention seems like a very basic detail that should always be included in the law enforcement report, as usually, that initial report of even a fatal crash is all the public ever hears about it. (Mention of that detail *might incentivize use of helmets and seatbelts with some readers…)
The last thing you want is a seatbelt on a motorcycle. It is usually much safer to get thrown off than get dragged with your leg under the bike. I agree with the helmet but that is their decision to make. Remember … My body my choice right 😉
