Mother arrested for manslaughter of her young children after fatal accident

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Christina Shantell Gordan, 29, has been arrested on two counts of vehicular manslaughter after an investigation found that her two young children were not in child safety seats when they died in a crash in July 2025.

Gainesville Police Department’s investigation found that at about 6:07 a.m. on July 10, Gordan was driving her vehicle westbound on SW Williston Road when a vehicle turning left onto I-75 failed to yield to Gordan’s vehicle, causing the crash. Bystanders who arrived immediately after the crash reportedly found a six-month-old infant on the driver’s side floorboard between Gordan’s legs, and Gordan reportedly told the witnesses there was a second child, a 22-month-old, who was found on the front passenger floorboard. The two children were trauma-alerted to UF Health Shands and later succumbed to their injuries.

No child seats were found in the passenger compartment of Gordan’s vehicle, and one infant car seat (without a base) was reportedly found in the trunk. The front driver and front passenger seatbelts were locked in the retracted position, leading investigators to conclude that none of the occupants were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Gordan reportedly told an officer at the scene that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and she said she put both children in the front passenger seat without a seatbelt.

Post Miranda, Gordan reportedly said she had just passed McDonald’s on Williston Road and was headed “toward Archer” when she was hit, and she said that both children were in the front passenger seat with the seatbelt on, but GPD’s investigation found that this was incorrect, based on the evidence in the vehicle and Gordan’s statements, which were captured on an officer’s body-worn camera.

The investigation found that the infant was probably sitting on Gordan’s lap at the time of the crash, and the toddler was probably in the passenger seat, unrestrained.

According to a witness who was interviewed later, Gordan owned car seats for the children and normally transported the children in the vehicle she drove on the day of the accident.

The investigation found that Gordan caused the deaths of the children by culpable negligence by not securing them in child safety seats. The investigation concludes, “[Gordan’s] failure and omission to secure the [victims] in car seats in the rear of the vehicle, as dictated by state law, led to catastrophic injuries, resulting in death from a car crash.”

Gordan has been charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter. She has no criminal convictions, and Judge Denise Ferrero set bail at $40,000 in the arrest warrant she signed on February 13.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Oh My, this is really going to reactivate more trauma. these car seats are so expensive. Help her LORD.

    • There are multiple ways in the State of Florida to get free car seats. Not to mention it appears there was an infant seat in the TRUNK of the car. That really helped that poor child during the crash 🙁

    • Concern Gal – REALLY??? You can’t leave the hospital with a newborn unless you have a car seat AND there are programs in our county that will GIVE car seats to those who need one.

  • This whole situation is tragic, all around. So sad for the lives lost and the eternal pain this family will endure.

  • A wakeup call to everyone…I live in the Mentone subdivision off of Archer Rd (not too far from this accident as the crow flies). In my middle class subdivision I daily see several families’ children sitting on the laps of parents in the car, hanging out rear windows, jumping around and no evidence of any concern by some of these so called “educated professional” parents that dominate this subdivision. They are oblivious to what can happen if you unexpectedly hit the brakes at even 5 mph and the kid flies into the windshield. If you say anything you get the dirty “Karen” look and they do it again. How many kids need to die before law enforcement starts to get proactive and cite these so called parents?

  • Look at her picture. Do you really think she cares about putting her kids into car seats much less anything else?

  • It’s always sad and tragic having parents who lie to LEOs.

But I’m trying to visualize this, and may need a Judge Judy traffic poster: “Gordan was driving her vehicle westbound on SW Williston Road when a vehicle turning left onto I-75 failed to yield to Gordan’s vehicle, causing the crash.” Was the other vehicle in the right (merge) lane and cut off Gordan on way to I-75 entry ramp southbound? 🧐🤔🤓

  • I work in automotive service. I see so many , so many people come in with their cars and seatbelts buckled, sitting on top of them. kids sometimes in car seats and sometimes not. It seems a mix of why they do this. Sometimes it is redneck government not going to tell me what to do.. and sometimes it is ” I rely on Jesus to keep us safe “. And I see these incidents. When I was younger I worked for a funeral home. I will never forget going on a road accident call where mom and dad went through the windshield on a head on collision. baby was safe in back seat. instant orphan. could have been easily prevented. I makes me angry, every damn time.

  • My friend is a retired cop. He said whenever he pulled over someone without a car seat, he would hold the ticket for 24 hours and tear it up if they showed him they bought one. If they could not afford one, he would buy them one out of his own pocket.

  • Crazy how when a black mother loses a child in a crash the THI is notified and does his job, when the mother is white and suspected of being impaired or distracted, the THI doesn’t find out until two weeks later.

The officer at the scene takes the witness statements that say the mother caused the crash but after spending the night at the hospital with the witness and mother, the next day the witnesses identification is unknown and now the mother changes her story and says she had the green light and the witness now says he cant remember what color the light was, when the night of the accident on the crash report the witness says the black guy had the green light.

Then a medical examiners report comes out that say he hit her, while the crash report says she hit him, and a whole bunch of fraud and injustice ensues.

    • So the entire system starting with the THI officer works to the disadvantage of the black race from the start? Wow, I didn’t know there were different rules for first responders upon arrival at the scene when they discover the person is black. Who knew??
I think what you are whining about comes down to each crash having their own set of unique circumstances. Responding THI units will find physical and electronic evidence at the scene pointing to the cause of the crash. Impairment clues are usually is found at the scene as well. Sometimes clues are obvious, sometimes the scene requires a months long reconstruction effort to deterimine the cause. Scenes are worked based on evidence not the skin color of people involved. Grow up man.

      • If the officer fails to notify the department and THI of the loss of life per policy, the how can the THI do a proper investigation after finding out two weeks later from another officer who reported to their superior what the officer who worked the crash did not.

The fact that the THI wrote a report saying, I was working that night and I don’t know why nobody called me but two weeks later I found out and did the best I could.

Then a medical examiners report comes out that says the black guy hit the white girl on the drivers side and passenger side of her car, when the crash report says she hit him.

When an investigation into the examiners report is done, the medical examiners commission concludes the documentation received from GPD intially was wrong.

yet, nobody did anything to correct these mistakes which led to fraud being committed.

Anytime you wanna have a meeting and actually learn the fact let me know.

Each crash may be different by the law, statues and policy are designed to account for all these differences, so when what is written is not followed not what do you have to say?

This is what you white people do, being to generalize, deflect and minimize when you are accused by minorities of injustice.

As if a black man lacks the intelligence to read the law, statue and procedure and then juxtapose this against the facts of his situation to determine if everything was done right, and where an injustice occurred.

Oh, that’s right American academia initially said black men were incapable of intelligence, so how could this black man possible be able to comprehend the intricacies of law, policy and procedure.

Again I can prove what I’m saying, you are just talking out of your porthole.

      • Also notice how I spoke of one incident and this clown redirected it to mean the entire system.

Did I say the entire system, or did I juxtapose this women’s experience with one of my own?

Then relegates my injustice to whining and being immature.

Thats what a lot of white folks said, “I’m just ninja trying to get a check”, “He’s just mad things did not go his way”.

I see you my guy, in hd vision.

      • oh and in addition the officer refused to write the white woman a ticket because she felt sorry for her loss, but wait if you don’t write that ticket, it leaves the true victim of the accident in a gray area when it comes to the insurance claim.

    • The other driver was at fault, the police report said. This arrest is for child neglect manslaughter, valid regardless of driver fault.

      • The statues say that who ever caused the crash is to be charged, when an infant is involved or unborn child is involved.

The manslaughter charge is for the other driver, culpable Negligence for the mother.

  • A terrible tragedy, but in Free Florida, a parent should be able to “do her own research” and determine whether or not car seats are right for her family. The GOP Nanny State strikes again!

    • Sammy, you are a piece of work. Turn a tragedy into a political statement. Two childern are dead. A mother charged with manslaughter because she failed to protect her kids with car seats and another driver that has to live with the fact they were involved in a traffic crash resulting in death. Yep you are the cat’s meow.

      • The other driver is the reason the kids are dead.

The mothers negligence is not what caused the initial impact, it was another driver failing to yield the right of way.

That was slick how you just characterized that Bear.

This is why the manslaughter charge must be applied to the one who caused the accident, and negligence on the mother for not having the kids properly restrained.

If would be different if the mother caused the crash.
