Naked man arrested for attempted sexual battery in convenience store bathroom
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Malcolm L. Andrews, 55, was arrested last night and charged with attempted sexual battery on a minor, voyeurism, and indecent exposure after allegedly trying to enter a bathroom stall at Wawa, completely naked, with the intent of having sex with the teenage girl who was using the stall.
The victim, a juvenile, reportedly told a Gainesville Police Department officer that she was in a stall in the women’s bathroom at Wawa (1614 W. University Avenue) when she noticed a man with bare feet in the next stall and then realized there was a pile of neatly folded clothes at his feet. She said that when she looked up, she saw a man watching her over the stall divider.
The victim said she screamed, and then the man left his stall and tried to open her stall door, causing her to scream again. Her boyfriend and a store employee reportedly ran into the bathroom and pushed the man, later identified as Andrews, out of the bathroom. The victim said she had never seen Andrews before and had had no prior contact with him.
The victim’s boyfriend reportedly told the officer that he heard the victim scream and went into the bathroom with a store employee, where he saw a man standing in front of a stall, completely naked. The store employee reportedly said she saw the man trying to open the victim’s stall door.
Three other witnesses reported that they saw a man running away from the store, completely naked.
Officers reportedly found Andrews nearby, without any clothes on, and the store employee positively identified him as the man she had seen naked in the bathroom.
Andrews reportedly told an officer that he was supposed to meet up with a woman at the store to have sex and that he had believed the victim was the woman he was supposed to meet; he reportedly said he had intended to have sex with her. A search of Andrews’ belongings reportedly produced an unopened condom.
Post Miranda, Andrews reportedly said he had already explained what had happened and then declined to answer any more questions.
Although Andrews’ address is listed as Lenoir, NC, he has had contact with local law enforcement since 2018 and has an unspecified criminal history in North Carolina along with two local misdemeanor convictions (non-violent) and one local felony conviction (violent). He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in 2021 for threatening a man with a knife and was committed to a state mental hospital that year. He was found competent to proceed in February 2024 and entered a plea of nolo contendere to the charge. In March, Judge David Kreider sentenced him to 18 months in prison with credit for 18 months served, and he was released.
Judge David Kreider ordered Andrews held without bail, pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Attempted rape the bastard should’ve been shot by someone in the store with a gun, but I keep forgetting it’s Alachua County and the city Gainesville and they don’t believe in second amendment and caring a gun
What local ordinance stopped someone from carrying in this store? Thankfully State of Florida has expanded and Supreme Court continue to protect 2nd amendment rights.
why do these degenerates feel so welcome in Gainesville?
They only feel welcome in certain locations. The degenerates gravitate to where they are accepted. Woke Wawa needs to get its management in order. I live in the middle of Gville and it’s very obvious where these people congregate…and most businesses do not put up with it! But Wawa does
The open arms of the idiot leaders that keep getting elected by the majority of people who want and welcome them
How terrifying. She will probably remember this every time she uses a public bathroom, at least for a while. We will be even more of a laughing stock if that Wawa has to close because Gainesville is an open-air lunatic asylum. Fire Curry and find someone serious.
WTF poor victims at Wawa! “In March, Judge David Kreider sentenced him to 18 months in prison with credit for 18 months served, and he was released.”
STOP returning scummy judges to the courts! 🤡💩👹👿👺ACLUSPLCDNC
another example of a retail store that will either have to add or increase private security. Costs go up for all.
Stores like wawa won’t be able to do it, but this is another example why retail and grocery stores want to ideally go to the local distribution center model where folks pick their stuff up outside to limit public coming into facility to steal and be destructive and who knows what else. Low Trust society we seem to be drifting towards.
Gainesville Wawa’s are basically little San Francisco’s. Been like that since they opened here. That’s who they cater to and that’s what the get.
Yeah, it is always Wawa in the news for issues like this (except East Gainesville stores). Most other c-stores don’t have these problems.
Randy — I think that’s part of the problem — what the store owners allow to happen on their property. If they wouldn’t allow crowds, parking lot concerts, or people standing around doing nothing ALL DAY then maybe these issues would be reduced? 🤷♀️
Just think, if we could get rid of the homeless and the Wawas the crime rate might go down 60 – 70%.
If we could get rid of the commissioners who invite and condone such people and their actions we may even get the crime rate to decline by 90%.
Hope the liberal majority are happy…it probably wasn’t their daughter or sister.
Yup. Wawa on 13th and 23rd is nothing but a public bath house for the homeless
Wawa is a corporate political DEI operation. Brag about it on their website. Sad.
Why is this guy on the streets. He supposedly has mental issues, and is cured according to the judge. His actions at the Wawa should have earned him a good beating.
You comment on every single article by the second. You either are law enforcement or you can’t get no chick without being weird like Andrew’s here. Which is it?
Her boyfriend should of picked something up and beat his head in. That pisses me off. Some old pervert trying to rape a teenage girl. I have a teenage girl.
Was it a boy’s, girl’s, or can’t decide bathroom?
That may work in his defense given the city he was arrested in.
Article clearly states she was in the women’s bathroom. Hope this helps.
Thanks, read right over that.
He/it was playing girl for the day? May still be good defense, most rapes aren’t committed by girls.
I have never been to Wawa. I read too many negative things about Wawa.. I’m not afraid to shop there. I don’t go there because I’m afraid I might have to use my 2nd amendment rights.
He’s a real Romeo…..how romantic.
Wth?!? Protect law abiding citizens for a change and lock him up for good!
And to commissioners……he is not a local. Stop rolling out red carpet to the homeless and criminals!
“In March, Judge David Kreider sentenced him to 18 months in prison with credit for 18 months served, and he was released.”
Wondering if boyfriend/dad would have broken an arm, leg, or couple ribs if they would have been arrested for protecting their loved one? Any LEOs care to chime in? There’s times you’re not able to respond in a timely manner.
Not saying I support violence but I’m much more willing to protect my loved ones than hide behind them like Ward & Poe do.
