Newberry man arrested on gun charges after shooting death

NEWBERRY, Fla. – David Dwayne Martin, Jr., 19, was arrested yesterday after a man was shot and killed in Newberry.
At about 11:45 a.m. on May 25, Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 25700 block of NW 7th Place and found a man who had been shot in the chest; he was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Deputies at the scene spoke to Martin, who claimed to be the shooter, and detained him.
Post Miranda at the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, Martin reportedly said the firearm used in the shooting was a 9mm Glock 19 Gen5 with a laser/strobe light and an extended 17-round magazine. He said that after the shooting, he fled to “Triangle Park” (120 NW 260th Street), where he gave the firearm to someone else before returning to the scene of the shooting. He also reportedly said that before the shooting, he had been in a vehicle with the firearm concealed in a backpack, and he put the gun in his pocket before shooting and killing the victim.
A witness reportedly told a deputy that a biracial male matching Martin’s description had run to a grill near the witness’s residence and put something inside. ASO personnel reportedly found a firearm inside the grill that exactly matched Martin’s description.
Martin also reportedly said that after the shooting, he gave the gun to a “friend,” whom he described as a tall Caucasian male with long hair. When deputies asked him to reconcile the differing accounts of his actions after the shooting, he reportedly asked for an attorney.
Based on the evidence available at this time, Martin has been charged with unlawfully carrying a concealed firearm and tampering with evidence. The shooting death is still under investigation.
Martin has no local criminal history. Judge Luis Bustamante set bail at $500,000.

There cannot be a worse feeling in the world than to be sitting in jail, your whole life in front on you, when it fully dawns on you that you will spend the rest of your life in jail, never to get out and never to be free again.
Before you commit things like this think about his family his friends he was a kid too he did it to save himself and the others involved the other guy was crazy David is the sweetest guy you could ever meet he would do anything for anybody the media doesn’t say everything that happens

Your post raises so many questions:
How did the kid get the gun if he was just a kid?
It’s hard to believe he’s such a sweet guy, right? Then why did he lie about hiding the gun?
I wonder how/why someone who isn’t smart enough to stay away from the scene of the crime and admit what he did, would know the make, model and version of the gun he had. The story certainly is incomplete and doesn’t make sense as of now.
I knew david personally. He was a very sweet guy. He would always help come by my house and bring food when I didnt have any. It’s sad to see but he isn’t a bad person. Just made a bad mistake.

Media said what was important to many:
He shot and killed someone.
He tried to hide the firearm.
He was not legally permitted to have the firearm.
Doesn’t matter how ‘sweet’ you think he was, he obviously had some people fooled. It definitely appears to have been premeditated.

F Small Town Girl, the outsiders are only going with the published information. If you want to be upset it needs to be directed towards the entity that released the information. If this is a stand your ground I hope he has witnesses that will stand up and tell the truth.
Even with the information released, why try to talk on a subject that they don’t know the full extent of. Especially talking down about him. Im not mad about all the information that was left out, I’m mad at people calling him a horrible person because of a mistake he made.

Not mad at that, I will repeat what I have already said. People should not be making negative comments on someone they do not know. Especially to the full extent. the standard magazine outside of california for a glock 19 carries 17 rounds, 16+1. Stop trying to make it sound more special than it is.
Try doing the tiniest bit of research… the standard magazine for a Glock 19 holds 15 rounds.

Sounds like there is more to the story based on the comments here and on Fbook. It doesn’t sound like the typical “thug with a gun,” but a kid who was scared for his/his family’s lives. Unfortunately, it does sound premeditated, so he will face time, but hopefully the circumstances will lead to some leniency

You guys ain’t never been in the streets, it hurts to have to see someone get arrested for defending others. Sure the 19-year-old may have had a gun without legal permission. But at the end of the day, I bet if any one of you were in that situation, you would’ve done the same thing. And all of these ACPS parents.
