Newberry man on pre-trial diversion arrested for burglary and drug possession

Staff report

NEWBERRY, Fla. – Edwin Lee Daniels, 18, of Newberry, was arrested last night on a warrant for residential burglary and charged with drug possession at the time of his arrest. He is on pre-trial diversion for a June 2023 incident in which he was charged with possession of a firearm and a separate extended magazine after being convicted as a juvenile of a crime that would be a felony for an adult.

The burglary of a Newberry residence occurred on December 3, 2020, when Daniels was 15. It was moved to the adult judicial system in December 2023, and a warrant was issued for Daniels’ arrest with a recommended bond of $75,000.

When Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies served the warrant last night at Daniels’ Newberry home, they reportedly saw a bag of marijuana in plain view on the floor of his bedroom.

Post Miranda, Daniels reportedly said the substance in the bag was “weed” and that it was for his personal use.

Daniels has been charged with possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and burglary. No affidavits have yet been filed in the pre-trial diversion case, but that agreement requires him to live without breaking the law until July 2024. Daniels has juvenile convictions in 2019 and 2020 but no adult convictions other than the pending pre-trial diversion case. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $75,000 on the burglary charge and $2,500 on the drug charges.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • What is the point of having a “Gun Violence Summit” and all this other leftist nonsense if our State Attorney’s Office is giving these 🤡’s Pre-Trial Diversion for gun crimes? This guy already racked up felonies as a juvenile, as was likely given a slap on the wrist then too. Prison time should be mandatory for any firearm offenses.

  • I am not sure how he would be eligible for pre-trial dirversion since he has had gun offenses. I would think that would be considered at risk but it is Alachua County. Obviously diversion counseling and treatment has not worked out well for Edwin. There is something seriously wrong with someone who can not go through day to day responsibilities without having to suck on the weed pipe, especially at 18.

  • “Newberry man on pre-trial diversion arrested for burglary and drug possession”

How bout giving him some ‘pre-trial’ incarceration before he shoots someone?

  • What judge could look at this guy’s record and think he had the slightest chance of getting to July 2024 without breaking the law (and getting caught)?

  • Maybe someone should arrest his parent. He obviously doesn’t care about any laws. He will be a ward of the state for the rest of his life and a life time loser.

  • Sad another wasted life. As an old man what is wrong with young folks. I didn’t grow up in an ideal situation, but stealing was never an option. Didn’t know what I wanted to do in life but being involved in criminal activity and possibly going to jail would bring shame to my family. I joined the Army and the rest is history.
Nowadays it is a honor to go to prison.
It is even celebrated upon their release. Like returning from a tour of duty in the military.
Even now I would never disgrace my family, my country and if I dare to say my God.

  • Looks like the Mayor and Cohorts, cannot learn past their ignorance, Mr. Daniels certainly hasn’t, he has been encouraged by their ignorance.
