Newberry man sentenced to 30 days in jail and 3 years of probation for pointing gun at two teens on I-75

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Robert Charles Reno III, 35, of Newberry, has been sentenced to 30 days in jail, followed by three years of probation, after entering a plea of nolo contendere to two counts of pointing a gun at two teens on I-75.

Original arrest

On September 7, 2025, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to the 388 mile marker on southbound I-75 (about two miles south of the NW 39th Avenue exit), where the victims, a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old from High Springs, said a man had pointed a handgun at them while driving next to them.

The deputy’s investigation found that both vehicles were traveling southbound in the left lane when the driver of the victims’ car hit his brakes, causing Reno to have to hit his brakes to prevent a crash. Reno then drove into the center lane, pulled up next to the victims’ car, and pointed a handgun at the victims. The driver of the victims’ car drove away from Reno’s car because he believed Reno would shoot them.

Plea deal

On March 5, Reno entered a plea of nolo contendere to two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; according to the plea agreement, the charges carry a maximum possible sentence of 10 years in state prison.

On the same date, Judge James Colaw sentenced Reno to 30 days in the Alachua County Jail with credit for six days’ served, followed by three years of probation. He is required to forfeit the firearm that was involved in the incident, and he has to attend and complete an anger management course. While on probation, Reno is required to abstain from the use of alcohol to excess or illegal drugs and must submit to random urine tests.

Reno turned himself in to begin serving his sentence last night.

  • Now a convicted felon for an act of road rage. Everything that he did was easily avoidable by better judgement.

    • Better judgement 😜 that’s not what these springs county finest are know for. No way he makes it through probation.

      • Oh and Gainesville’s finest felons are known for their renowned judgement and redeeming qualities. LOL. You won that special award again today.

  • Why only a 30 day county jail sentence for a gun violence crime? This shows yet again how insincere Ward and the Democrats running the area are about solving gun violence.

      • They see more of the local east side democratic voters than springs voters in the court system

      • Crying Bear…..maybe if you dry your liberal tears you could comprehend the article above and know this Westsider received an actual jail sentence unlike many of the Eastsiders who get no bail, low bail, probation, pre-trial release, uncollected restitution, fines % court costs, and the rest of your woke DEI BS sentences from liberal judges.

  • Thirty days oughta be enough time to figure out his problem. I hope he does.

  • I read the report on this one. ASO didn’t talk to him until the day after. he basically confessed they searched the vehicle found a gun. He convicted himself. All he had to do was either remain silent or just deny their story with counter story and not consent to a search. They would have been no evidence for an arrest. because all you have is a they said/he said. there’s no video and real evidence. So besides having an anger management problem this guy isn’t very smart
