Newberry woman killed in crash on SR 121, south of Gainesville

Staff report from Florida Highway Patrol release

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – A 63-year-old Newberry woman was killed this morning when a car turning left in front of her collided with her vehicle, causing it to hit a tree.

At about 7:33 a.m. on April 7, the Newberry woman was driving a sedan southbound on SR 121 when an SUV driven by a 77-year-old Archer woman turned left from SW 137th Avenue onto SR121 and collided with the sedan, causing the sedan to run off the roadway and hit a tree. The Newberry woman, who was wearing a seatbelt, was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the SUV and a 52-year-old male passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, and a 45-year-old female passenger was not injured. All of the occupants of the SUV were Archer residents, and all were wearing seatbelts.

This is an active and ongoing investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit. Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and Alachua County Fire Rescue assisted in responding to the crash.

  • We stopped using SR 121 south of Gainesville (regardless of the cost) several years ago after someone passing us (we were doing slightly above the speed limit) drove a car coming in the opposite direction off the road. Using that road is not worth the risk, given the driving public these days.

  • People need to slow down 121 is a deadly road something needs to be done seriously there more drive safe signs with names of deceased than there is trees it’s sad
