Newnans Lake boat ramp closed to motorized watercraft

Press release from Alachua County

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Due to low water levels on Newnans Lake caused by dry weather conditions, the boat ramp (11309 SE 16th Ave., Gainesville) is closed to motorized watercraft. Paddle craft can still use the ramp to launch.

When water levels increase to acceptable levels, the ramp will reopen to motorized craft.

  • Do we know why the levels have dropped so much? Is UF IFAS on this issue? Is it draining into Paines Prarie or some other place? We haven’t had a horrible drought, so where is it going? I’ve never seen this in 22 years that I have been here. Something is amiss.

    • I’m more concerned about the water quality than the level. That water looks toxic. Don’t think I’ll be eating any panfish out of that lake any time soon.

  • happened not to many years ago when they found the dugout canoes we havent had any rain lakes are down all over
