Norton Elementary teacher charged with aggravated child abuse for allegedly ripping off adopted daughter’s fake fingernails
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Johanna Lynn Sedgley, 66, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with aggravated child abuse after allegedly ripping off her adopted daughter’s fake fingernails, resulting in one fingernail being completely ripped out of the nail bed. Sedgley is a second-grade teacher at Norton Elementary School.
The 15-year-old victim reportedly went to her school nurse on Tuesday, complaining that her fingers hurt too much to do her work. The nurse reported the injuries to law enforcement and the Department of Children and Families, and a forensic interview was conducted with the victim.
The victim reportedly said that she had gotten fake nails glued on the previous day, and Sedgley had said they were a “distraction.” She said Sedgley started ripping the nails off, and when she started crying and asked her to stop, Sedgley allegedly held her hand down and used her other hand to rip off each nail, one by one. The victim said she tried to pull her hands away, but Sedgley just gripped her harder. A nurse reportedly told investigators that one of the victim’s nails had been ripped out of the nail bed, which could lead to permanent damage and pain from having an exposed nail bed.
The victim said she asked Sedgley if she could get a bandage, but Sedgley would not let her have one. She said her finger was bleeding, so she held a washcloth on it to get it to stop bleeding. She said she tried to do her work at school, but her fingers hurt too much.
The victim said Sedgley has threatened multiple times to send her back to foster care.
A sworn complaint was filed against Sedgley in February for child neglect against the same victim, but she has not yet been booked on that charge.
Post Miranda, Sedgley reportedly admitted that she ripped off the victim’s fake nails. She said she was unaware that the victim was in pain despite reportedly admitting that the victim was crying, screaming, and repeatedly telling her it hurt and asking her to stop. She reportedly agreed that she made a mistake.
Sedgley reportedly denied threatening to send the victim back to foster care, but she said she told the victim she had “two options: staying with her or going back to foster care.”
Alachua County Public Schools confirmed that Sedgley is a second-grade teacher at Norton Elementary and said she is “currently on leave.”
Sedgley has no criminal convictions; Judge Susan Miller-Jones ordered her held without bail pending a hearing on the State Attorney’s motion to hold her without bail until trial. The motion argues that “there are no conditions of release reasonably sufficient to protect the community from the risk of physical harm to persons.”
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.Â
Holding her without bail seems like a bit much.
Did you think before you wrote your comment?
Seems like good parenting to me
Spare the rod spoil the child.
Big difference between using a rod and tearing off a child’s fingernail.
That explains why these people on these comments are the way they are lmfao.
That’s some old school mob boss sh!t
People are snapping faster and faster every day…God help us!…especially the children!
Some folks say teachers like her with no criminal convictions should be allowed to carry a gun to school. That would make all the kiddies safer.
She was probably for making children wear face masks too…
🤔A bit surprised the SAO filed a motion to be held without bond considering the people they do release. Probably not so surprising to some is the judge ordered her held until the motion has been heard.
I’m pretty sure the child has been removed, for now at least, so she wouldn’t have been a danger to her.
That is puzzling.
The woman who left her children at home so she could go party, who had prior arrests, was granted a bail amount from the same judge.
Justice must be blind because I’m apparently missing something.
Leaving a child alone at night and tearing their fingernails off is not the same. I am not taking up for the selfish idiot that left her five years olds home alone but that does not compare to ripping out someone’s nails. That is psychotic.
And it was in front of her second graders
Try again.
Exactly! The child begged her to stop while being physically restrained and both requests were denied. The mother could have purchased acetone and removed the nails rather than physically ripping them off. This woman also WORKS with CHILDREN. Disgusting.
Dude…..are you serious? Please do not have children. Super dangerous to leave 2 five yr olds home alone. They could’ve hurt themselves, set the house on fire, been abducted. Huge risk leaving kids that age unattended.
What the he!! Is wrong with people.
You said it right . Evil from satan is exactly what is going on and the government effort to defeat God and his believers.
TV 20 reported that the 15 adopted girl has been diagnosed with autism. Given that information and if it true Johanna Sedgley is a terrible stepmother and deserves everything coming to her. The girl had her real actual fingernail ripped off by her stepmother. All the while her autistic child is begging her to stop, bleeding , and telling her stepmother she is in pain. Her child is then sent school where it took a nurse to realize the abuse. This woman is a 2nd grade teacher. God knows what she would do to a 2nd grade student who might do something that sets her off. She has no business around kids anymore, maybe she gas reached that age where she can’t tolerate kids. She adopted this girl who may be autistic but constantly threatening her with going back to foster care. She has another charge awaiting her for child neglect with the same girl. She deserves everything criminal coming at her. And ACSB and Norton need to check to see if there are any abuse cases from kids that she has taught.
Why do you keep saying stepmother? Isn’t she her adoptive mother?
Don’t misdirect…stop nitpicking the mis-usage of one word and address his actual statements. We all know what he meant.
It gets very tiring seeing attorneys and family members taking up for their degenerates and loonies.
Nope, not a defense attorney or a family member. I saw someone post something on a community Facebook forum stating she was their family member’s former stepmother or something like that, so I wondered if maybe it was the same poster and if he or she had more info than we did. Wasn’t to nitpick or detract from what the poster was saying.
Ok we can call momalla, or the devil, or WT Hyou want. Right now its inmate.
At that point She was tired of That baby Just getting the State money being Greedy Is Sad .
She was a real mean person in elementary, so I definitely believe it and say she deserves it you make your choices and it’s up to you to change them.
Glad she got no bail!!! We have got to start putting kids safety first!
Good grief. Teaching your kids.
It’s easy to overlook in the article, but note that this lady had a sworn complaint against her back in February for child neglect.
So I have to think this child abuse has been going on for who knows how long.
Not sure when the child was adopted, but a 66-year-old woman has no business trying to play mother to a troubled 15-year-old.
