One arrested, one at large in Cedar Ridge shooting

Akeem Reashard Nelson, 21, was arrested yesterday afternoon following a morning shooting in Cedar Ridge (6800 block of SW 6th Place).

When Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of gunshots in the area Thursday morning, they reportedly found several spent shell casings and several areas of blood.

Multiple witnesses reported that a young man wearing camo pants was one of the shooters and that he had run into a nearby apartment, still carrying a gun. Witnesses also reported that the person who was shot had a gun and was shooting back at the man wearing camo plants. The person who was shot has still not been located.

After about 20 minutes of trying to get the man to leave the apartment, he came out and was identified as Nelson. Deputies learned that Nelson had an active warrant for failure to appear on a charge of driving without a valid license and took him to the Sheriff’s Office to be interviewed. Post Miranda, he reportedly claimed that the other person had pointed a gun at him first and that he acted in self-defense; he said he did not know the other person. He also reportedly admitted that the gun was his but said he didn’t know where he put it after the shooting; the gun has not been located. He had also changed out of the distinctive camo pants that witnesses had described.

Nelson has been charged with tampering with evidence for changing his clothing and hiding the gun and is being held on $102,500 bail. The incident is still being investigated.
