“One less MAGA in the world”: Alachua County School Board Chair Sarah Rockwell celebrates Hulk Hogan’s death

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Responding from her personal account to a Facebook post about recent celebrity deaths, Alachua County School Board Chair Sarah Rockwell posted, “Oh did Hulk die? I didn’t even know. Good. One less MAGA in the world.”

Rockwell issued an apology on July 26 for her “cruel and flippant” comment. Click here to read her statement.

Her comment was in response to a post from Chanae Jackson about recent celebrity deaths: “I want y’all to stop clumping Theo in with Ozzy and Hulk. They are not the same and stop honoring racists just because they are familiar!”

A modified version of Rockwell’s post is circulating, with “Good. One less MAGA in the world” replaced with “Praying for his friends and family,” but the posts in the screenshot at the top of this article could still be seen on Jackson’s post when this article was published (select “All comments” to see it).

Alachua County Republican Party Chair Tim Marden told Alachua Chronicle, “I am surprised but probably should not be about her comment circulating on social media. Elected School Board Member and DOCTOR Sarah Rockwell stomped on a man’s grave for simply being from another political party.

“Let there be no doubt what she thinks of the 49,585 registered republicans in Alachua County, many of whom have children in our school system and pay outrageous taxes for substandard results.

“I would like to see the School Board censure her, but we know they won’t.”

    • Have mercy. Sarah Lardwell is sick, has to wear a smelly face diaper everyday and isn’t even smart enough to know it’s own gender.

    • What happened to freedom of speech?? Or it only works for certain people?? I see nasty comments on here all day about community members and they use these fake names to hide behind. That’s her opinion of him, like when people post on here.

      • She can have her own opinion but since she hold a public office, she should refrain from posting hateful messages. Who says “good” when a human being dies? Wicked people! If a teacher had posted this, they would follow up with disciplinary consequences.

      • Sometimes, it’s better to keep one’s opinions to one’s self. Especially when you’re gleeful or euphoric over someone’s death. It’s basic common sense.

      • Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from the consequences of that speech. The classic example is yelling fire in a crowded theater. She is facing the consequences of wishing death on an entire political movement. How do think it would go over if reversed?

      • If your a school system employee, you are not to show bias, that’s working against those who pay you to educate children in a unbiased manor. She got caught and the apology has no merit.

      • Leaders are held to a higher standard. IF she cannot represent ALL people in her district, then quit & bad mouth anyone you want.

      • Freedom of speech is intact. Responsibility of your speech on your job should also be intact. For example, a surgeon may publically post he thinks post op pain meds should be withheld from post op patients and it is his right to be able say that, however, it is also the right of the local hospital to protect their patients from needless suffering by not having him on staff. This extremenly partisan, unfeeling woman who exhibits poor judgement should not be in the position of affecting the education of our children and should be removed.

I am sure Tim Marden in private has said some choice words again Democrats and others that dont align with his political views. All this publication does is further divide the community and incite hate againt the homeless and minorities. Where are articles about the law firm that embezzled funds? Where are the articles about the university official arrested for domestic violence? Where are the articles about the private school near Haile and the inappropriate behavior of teachers against students? Of course it wasnt covered because it doesnt involve a mentally ill homeless or a black person.

The special placements of poorly performing staff to District offices just because they’re minorities.

        I’m aware that she is an advocate for education for kids with special needs and autism, and her children have some disabilities.
        That I applaud. Those are valiant and worthy expenditures of thought and effort.
        I genuinely hope she makes some progress in that area of education, and I imagine she has some skills in those areas.

        That doesn’t outweigh this concept of lowering the bar and attempting policy change with outlandish ideas to artificially boost grades for children.

In a matter of minutes, Dr. Rockwell has undermined decades of community commitment to that endeavor.

    This behavior is not only unbecoming—it is disgraceful. Our children, educators, and community deserve better. Voters must treat this breach of public trust as a disqualifier for any future position of authority.

    I strongly urge her fellow board members to call for an immediate and public censure. Silence is complicity. Accountability begins now.

    Here’s what she had to say about higher property taxes: “Rockwell also said that even though the proposed advertisement will say it’s a tax rise, it’s an increase “on the total revenue based on changes in property values on the total tax roll.” ”

    That is a tax increase based off of dishonest over-appraisal of property values in the community.

  • Sarak Rockwell is reportedly an educated woman. Sarah Rockwell claims to have children with disabilities and is some sort of expert on the spectrum, disabilities, etc. Her Board peers quickly gave her the head position on The Board when elected. Despite being an elected official she has nevertheless continued to exhibit these bizaar behaviors (e.g. the mask at the board meetings for several years and her obsession with the weird posts on social media). This strikes me as odd and concerning and could indicate we have a woman with some real”issues” who is making policy for all of Alachua County students (many of whom are not necessarily liberal). The latest tirade towards a man who is dead really concernd me and I will definitely not forget it at election time. I always expect better from any elected official. Mrs Rockwell (if you are reading this): You need help. Seek it out and I’ll say a prayer for you (unless that offends you also?).

    Do you know what? For the many years I taught, even though I taught university courses where politics was very relevant, I kept my biases to myself. I sure as heck didn’t post anything on social media that I wouldn’t say directly to the deans or the students themselves. Impartiality and decorum were that important to me.

    Some of y’all like to mention the dumb insensitive stuff Trump has said. So because he has no filter, that makes it ok for Rockwell? Are we at a race to the bottom?

    And before you start with the “bringing a knife to a gun fight,” that is not Rockwell’s battle, not while she is on the dais. Her job is to be an IMPARTIAL steward for ALL ACPS STUDENTS. Any evidence that she is not impartial (like being glad another MAGA is dead) ERODES trust in her ability to be fair to all students.

    Again, I am NOT MAGA or conservative, but even I see the issue wirh her comment, especially at a time where the district needs to bring families back to ACPS

  • Ms Rockwell should apologize ASAP for her intemperate words about MAGA believers, though she is not morally compelled – in my opinion – to apolgize for words about the twice over racist Hulk H.

    Mr Marden should apologize to all Americans for his organizations (he’s a “national officer” of the John Birch Society) opposition to the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, a position it has not revisited or changed, and to the Republican Party for the JBS promotion of it’s position that Lincoln was responsible for the Civil War.

    Jennifer should apologize for asking Marden his opinion while not seeking or reporting opinions from a prominent county democratic leader(s). The result suggest more “gotcha” than news.

    Now she knows in some way what Hogan probably felt by a comment he made over a decade ago, except for her its only been a few days. She wants empathy now. Well, some in society never gave Hogan empathy for one word that he said.

  • I’m so very glad I’m a senior citizen. What happened to simple human compassion? All of these men were sons, husbands, fathers, friends. Not all caucasians are racists. My parents weren’t the greatest toward each other at times, but they did bring my brothers and I up to see no color. There is good and bad in all races. Show respect and compassion to everyone.
    It’s old fashioned, maybe. In my world, its stood the test of time.
