NEWBERRY, Fla. – Caleb James Martin, 18, and Donell Kensha Moultrie, 18, were arrested yesterday after allegedly fleeing from a traffic stop.
Video of the stop can be seen here (courtesy Alachua County Sheriff’s Office).
At about 6:27 a.m. on October 19, Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies received information from Gilchrist County about a dark-colored sedan heading eastbound on State Road 26 (W. Newberry Road) toward the Alachua County line. Deputies saw the sedan in the 17500 block of W. Newberry Road and activated lights and sirens, but the driver allegedly continued to flee eastbound at speeds over 100 mph. The driver turned left on NW 143rd Street (CR 241) and drove northbound. Deputies deployed stop sticks in the 4600 block of CR 241; the sedan’s tires deflated, and the car crashed in the 5600 block of CR 241.
The driver and front passenger reportedly fled from the vehicle despite commands from deputies to get on the ground. The backseat passenger, Phillipe Chisolm, was arrested on a warrant.
Moultrie reportedly returned to the vehicle a short time later and was identified as the driver; he was arrested for fleeing with lights and sirens active and for resisting an officer without violence. Deputies learned that he had previously been issued a learner’s permit that was suspended on August 26, 2024 due to failure to pay traffic fines, so he was also charged with knowingly driving with a suspended license.
Martin allegedly fled eastbound through a nearby field, and deputies engaged in a foot pursuit. At about 3:05 p.m., deputies located Martin, and he allegedly fled on foot again; deputies eventually took him into custody.
The arresting deputy reported that dash camera footage from a patrol vehicle showed that Martin had a gun in his right hand when he got out of the car and then threw it to the rear of the vehicle in an effort to conceal it from law enforcement; the gun, a Glock 19 with an extended magazine, was reportedly found by deputies. Martin is an adjudicated delinquent, meaning he was previously found guilty of an offense that would be a felony for an adult, and he is prohibited from possessing a firearm until he is 24.
Deputies also reportedly found a Glock 43 on CR 241.
Post Miranda, Martin reportedly admitted that he had fled and said he fled because he was “in fear due to a large amount of white people around him.”
Martin has no adult convictions but has at least one juvenile conviction from 2021; Judge Craig DeThomasis set bail at $7,500.
Moultrie has no adult convictions but at least one juvenile conviction. He is facing two sworn complaints filed on October 17 but has not yet been booked on those charges; one sworn complaint charged him with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent, and possession of drug paraphernalia, and the other one charged him with possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent. Judge DeThomasis set bail at $8,000.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
What the hell kind of bail is that? #1 he made a racist comment about white people; #2 he has a gun; #3 license is suspended. He is inly 18. Clearly was not raised to respect authority and fillow the rules. You will see this guy again. Ridiculous.
Those comments are typical from certain ethnic groups about being scared of white people. It’s mostly because he wanted to run from the cops and it won’t get caught. He just tell didn’t want to tell the truth.
The first time I read it, I thought he ran because “he was in fear because he had a large amount of white powder around him”…because of the controlled substance & paraphernalia…
The white people thing may be a typo. The article does says people
And that can be a typo….people do make mistakes.
Shaquonda:
It’s probably a typo and was powder, not people…and people do make mistakes.
I’m with Kamala & Dr. Prizzio on
This and they need to be in school, not jail….they’re only 18..
Probably haven’t graduated from high school…
Let’s put our hand out and give them another chance to do something with their lives.
I believe education is the key to them having a successful & productive future.
Pink: you may be right. The kid who said it has that tattoo on his neck…he looks Hispanic …he’s kinda light skinned.
Kidding, right?
they’ll just get there patties smacked no time
Bad boys…bad boys….whatcha goin do when they come for you? Why….play the race card of course.
“Martin reportedly admitted that he had fled and said he fled because he was “in fear due to a large amount of white people around him.”
I think “people” is a typo and it’s supposed to be powder.
Some pretty soft bonds there, DeThomasis!
Afraid they’re gonna be late for work the next morning??
“ if you’re going to be a king, you need to be a good king”..
They’re young & stupid and can have a good future.
The bond is fine…needs to be enough to sting.
They’re in the criminal justice system now…
Hopefully they get help & rehabilitation and turn their lives around and become successful and then help others learn from their mistakes.
They’ve already been in the system. They’re in jail now bragging about their latest little crime spree. Shame on De Thomasis. You’ll see them again, bank on it.
These 2 will be heard from many times in the future
