Pair arrested for threatening to chop woman into pieces at homeless camp

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – James Aaron Olin, 28, and Sandy Ray Wilson, 52, were arrested yesterday after Wilson allegedly threatened to chop a woman into pieces at a homeless camp while Olin stood behind him with a knife.

At about 2:30 p.m., an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to the wooded area directly west of Moe’s Southwest Grill (7770 W. Newberry Road), where the victims said they were walking on the sidewalk toward the entrance to the woods when they passed Wilson. They said Wilson started yelling at them about past incidents.

The victims said they walked to their camp, passing Olin at his camp; at the time, they said, Olin was not aggressive toward them.

Shortly after the victims arrived at their camp, they heard yelling and saw Wilson and Olin walking toward them; they said Wilson had a large machete in his hands and threatened to chop the female victim into pieces. They said Olin was standing behind Wilson and had a large curved knife in his hands.

The victims said they felt they were in immediate danger and called the police; the male victim grabbed a small axe, but when Olin and Wilson realized the female victim was on the phone with the police, they quickly left.

Deputies found Olin and Wilson at a nearby gas station, based on descriptions provided by the victims.

Post Miranda, Olin reportedly said he and Wilson went to the victims’ camp because Wilson was mad about a previous incident between him and the female victim. He reportedly admitted to having a curved knife, and he said Wilson had a piece of wood, not a machete.

Post Miranda, Wilson reportedly declined to speak with deputies.

Olin has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has one felony conviction (non-violent) and six misdemeanor convictions (two violent) and is currently on probation for drug possession. Judge Jonathan Ramsey set bail at $15,000.

Wilson has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has one felony conviction (violent) and has an active warrant out of Duval County for misrepresenting himself as a licensed contractor. He has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release in 2014. Judge Jonathan Ramsey set bail at $10,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Bail seems a little low 15K/10k you know it’s going get lowered than ROR. These HOBOS are expanding west I noticed them walking down Newberry rd west bound and I’ve seen the around these woods. Seems like anywhere there’s a patch of trees for these hobos to hide they’re there. Maybe ASO/GPD needs to start arresting them for at least trespassing also I am sure they can get some other charges too for drugs, guns, and warrants at these hobo camps that might discourage them from taking up permanent residence in the GSSR. One these HOBOS going be the next Danny Rollings sooner or later. that’s he was a hobo sleeping in a tent. The GSSSR needs to listen to Ranger Smith and stop feeding the bears.

    • Signal 20: good post and like the offender info you attached! Very informative. Thank you!

      • thanks I try. I going update my position on this case nothing is going happen to them because the victim in this case is also homeless and wont show up for court so without the victim the case gets dropped and these hobos are free to do whatever they want next to include maybe the becoming the next danny rollings remember DR was just a hobo sleeping in a tent too

        • Signal20, historically, the term “hobo” was shorthand for “homeward bound”. The hobo typically rode on boxcars around the country looking for temporary labor to be able to support their families back home.
These people are not hobo’s. Hobo’s were hardworking and actively sought work. Tramp – travels but actively avoids work. Bum – avoids both travel AND work.

  • So these two vagrants, both felons, received such a low bail? Given that they beg for a living, they’ll be in jail til trial. Probably more comfy than living in the woods. Quite a smirk on the old boy.
