Pedestrian killed on Waldo Rd on Saturday

Press release from Gainesville Police Department

On Saturday, December 19, 2020, at approximately 6:55 p.m., Gainesville Police Department (GPD) officers responded to a vehicle collision with a pedestrian at the 2100 block of NE Waldo Road.

After arriving to the scene, GPD officers ascertained that a vehicle was traveling north on NE Waldo Road (SR 24) on the left/inside lane, when a pedestrian walked out into the roadway in front of the vehicle. The vehicle involved in the incident, as well as another vehicle that observed the accident, both pulled over to check on the victim. The pedestrian was immediately trauma alerted to UF Shands ER for life-threatening injuries when Alachua County Fire Rescue arrived, where he was later pronounced deceased.

At this time, no charges have been filed against the driver involved in the accident.

This is the 2nd traffic accident in the last 2 weeks resulting in the death of a pedestrian by a vehicle, along with another accident where the pedestrian is still in critical condition. GPD reminds drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians to be aware of your surroundings at all times, to obey all traffic laws, and to be especially attentive to traffic patterns in sparsely lighted areas.

  • Another tragedy that could have been avoided. Maybe GPD should, along with the corrupt and irresponsible Communist Commissioners, focus on the real problem, the open door policy to panhandling and disregard for crosswalks within the Gainesville city limits. On second thought maybe they should paint all the crosswalks the colors of a rainbow so they can’t be missed. Just saying.
