Gainesville Mayor Lauren Poe has resigned from his teaching job, effective at the end of the Santa Fe College spring semester. Poe submitted a letter of resignation on February 15, 2021, saying, “Teaching in the [High School Dual Enrollment] program has brought me much joy over the past 19 years and it is time for me to move on.”
Poe mentioned his resignation at the May 27 General Policy Committee meeting: “The majority of you, including myself, if not all of you, have quit your primary job, your primary source of income, because this takes so much… time and it takes so much emotional energy, that you can’t do it. You can’t do both.”
In response to a question about whether he had a comment, Poe replied, “Teaching has been an incredible honor. I will miss the opportunity to teach such amazing people at a world-class college. Thank you for all of the support over the past 23 years.”
When asked about pursuing other opportunities, he replied, “I will be pursuing the opportunity to spend significantly more time with my wife and daughters!”
