    • I agree it’s not funny but it is a way to open the eyes of these people that think Poe and Ward are some form of mayor and ex mayor. This idea of bringing illegal trespassers into this community is more like an assault. If you think there are problems now wait till this is in place. People need to step up and the State of Florida needs to step in to halt this attempted invasion.

  • I have no objection to former Mayor Poe’s non profit or their efforts. However, with the critical state of homelessness in Gainesville and other critical social needs throughout our Community, I really hope our local Elected leaders remained focused on providing resources and solutions to our Community. International refugees is a federal issue. While the County has been invited to participate, I believe now more than ever we should stay focused on our existing priorities.

    • Don’t believe a word you’re saying. You have changed over the years. Go look at the Dis-Grace Center. How many of them are from Alachua County or even Florida? These are not refugees. How much does Poe get paid for this Non-Profit?

      Therein lies part of your problem, as well as both the county and city’s problem. There are so many focuses on things that do not reflect the needs of the community. Why don’t you do more to clean up the vagrancy and filth around town? Maybe open your eyes to the trash around the downtown area when you’re going to meetings. Stop pandering to the divisiveness being promoted by Alford. How about objecting to the tyrannical rule of Ward and his henchmen and their continual abuse of GRU profits? You object to everything DeSantis does, why should local tyranny get a free pass other than you’re cut from the same liberal cloth?
      Why don’t you tell us, what exactly are your priorities? While you’re at it, tell us why the City voters should have more influence over the more rural voters in the county.
      Inquiring minds are just dying to hear excuses.

    • So Mr Cornell agrees that international refugees are not a local issue and still gets bashed by know-nothing regulars on this board for the homeless problem, which is national, meaning a problem everywhere in America where local living conditions are favorable.

      PS Complaining about rural voters being dominated by city voters is laughable when state legislators elected by rural voters have taken over the city government, forced single member districts with false information (most Florida counties are not single member), and have gutted Alachua County and the city through gerrymandered districts to where we have no representation in either house of the legislature or Congress, except for Rep Hinson.

      • Of course homelessness and illegal border trespassers are a national problem. That doesn’t mean it has to be a local problem. Gainesville and Alachua County did not and do not have pass bad policy. It’s the failed policies of both commissions that has created the homeless issue here. We do not need homeless centers which are more like homeless walmarts. We do not need government funded homeless encampment or funded encampments for illegal trespassers. If the county and city would have make it unfriendly to traveling handout seekers it may have lessened the flow pouring into this county. Demoncrats said Martha’s Vineyard had no room for illegal trespassers we can say the same thing.

        • Dude, of course you need options before you can round up people and throw them in jail. So have courts said and you can read the bill just signed by DeSantis within the last couple of months.

          This thread is about taking in international refugees, which Cornel says he opposes. Why don’t you take “yes” for an answer?

    • Another week, another string of bad ideas from city hall to spend other people’s money.

      The city is broke. Any and all intergovernmental agreements with the city need to be viewed like a business partnership with a ne’er do well cousin nursing a meth addiction.

      If the voters’ representatives at the county didn’t learn the lesson from the three card monte game run by grace marketplace and the city a couple months ago they don’t deserve a single vote in the next cycle.

  • This is the democrats plan to skew the vote with illegals. Don’t worry….I’m sure our Supervisor of Elections will comply with registering them to vote just like she permitted before by registering convicted felons at the county jail.

  • Illegal aliens are not refugees. They are already criminals by crossing our borders illegally. And then they have the nerve to demand US tax paying citizens pay for them. NONE OF THEM ARE WELCOME HERE OR ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE USA.

  • The city is broke and a joke. Poe is largely responsible. Look at sister city Athens GA. How are things there after Laken Riley was murdered by an illegal? Poe has never had an original thought in his life. Another delusional who rides on the back of government and non profits because he just can’t cut it working anywhere else. Why do sane people listen to or support him? Thank God he was not successful running for higher office.
