Registration for the City of Gainesville’s A Very GNV Holiday Parade will close early

Press release from City of Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Due to the high level of interest to date, applications for participation in the City of Gainesville’s 2023 A Very GNV Holiday Parade will close once the number of parade entries reaches 75, or at 9 a.m. on Friday, November 10, whichever comes first.
There who wish to join the dance troupes, marching bands, floats, and community groups registered to participate in the event scheduled Saturday, Dec. 2, should visit the parade webpage to find the registration form, parade rules, and additional details. Registration packets also can be picked up at City Hall (200 E. University Ave.) or the Historic Thomas Center (302 NE 6th St.).
Steve Spurrier, former head coach of the Florida Gators football team and 1966 Heisman Trophy winner, will appear as the grand marshal.
The parade will start at noon, moving from W. University Avenue and 6th Street and traveling approximately one mile, to end at the Alachua County Public Schools Administration Building at 620 E. University Avenue.
Is there a particular holiday that is being celebrated?
Thanksgiving?
This is likely to be a low participation/low attendance event. It’s troubling that we are paying city staff to plan this, and the majority of this parade will be in an area that hasn’t seen any economic development since Walmart arrived in the late 2000s. This is the equivalent of a low paying job having an employee appreciation cookout.
I understand this has a place in history, but we have way too much work to do now. To be honest, Gainesville is not the same city it was way back when.
Correction: This parade is not going as far east as I thought, however it still remains that we could have city staff working to address real issues.
