Registration opens for inaugural Gun Violence Prevention Summit

Press release from City of Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – City of Gainesville officials and community leaders invite neighbors to register online for the inaugural Gun Violence Prevention Summit, Choose Peace: Gun Violence Must Cease. The summit is scheduled for Sunday and Monday, Aug. 6-7, at the Hilton University of Florida Conference Center.
The first day is designed for community input. This day will have a panel discussion followed by breakout sessions, a resource fair featuring community organizations, and a youth town hall. Registration for Community Day is available through this link. Those who wish to register by phone may call 352-393-8587. Dinner will be provided for those who register.
The second day is a workshop for elected officials and professionals in the field. The public is welcome to attend and observe these discussions between stakeholders, but the goal is to enhance local government preparedness and heighten future collaborative strategies. Scribes will take minutes for entry into the official record.
The summit is designed to bring together area youth, young adults, parents, educators, public safety and mental health providers, community-based organizations, members of the faith community, and neighbors to work toward solutions to end gun violence in the community.
The material in these sessions will include violent content and some profane language. Portions of the discussion may be emotionally and intellectually challenging, particularly for young people. Mental health resources will be available on-site for those who would like additional support. The intent of this event is to create a space where participants can engage thoughtfully together.
The summit is free and open to the public. More information can be found online.
I wonder how much this cost the citizens of Gainesville thru GRU and taxes?
I bet most of it was paid from the Fed bucks that Harvey slithered up to DC to secure after he was elected. I only say that because these anti-gun PR events are happening in uber liberal cities around the country right now.
I wonder why the city doesn’t want to focus on all violence? It’s almost like they have a bone to pick with the second amendment…
You don’t belong to the militia and neither do I because it doesn’t exist anymore. In the constitution – remember that? – it is to be funded and trained by Congress and under order of the President. Look it up.
Jazzhole: I have a god given right to protect my life. Inalienable rights. That’s what the constitution is about. Break into my home to rob & kill me and find out.
God didn’t give you any rights or all humans would have had them no matter where and when you were born. We in America got our rights from the US government and the constitution upon which it is based, including amendments. We should be proud of it and the humans who conceived and defended it.
The Supreme Court has a different interpretation of Amendment 2 than you do, Jazzman. Maybe you just believe hard enough can prove to them why your opinion should predominate.
Or, you could save yourself some frustration and look up 10 U.S. Code § 246 – Militia: composition and classes.
I’ll even help you out. It says:
(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b) The classes of the militia are—
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.
Lex, the conservative US Supreme Court has legislated from the bench what it wishes the constitution says, not what it does say, and the Scalia authored Heller ruling overturned 200 years of precedent to do it. Since the 2nd amendment notes a “well regulated Militia” to justify gun ownership, by definition an “unorganized militia” as defined by 10 U.S. Code § 246 – written in 1956, not 1783 – does not fit that requirement.
Here’s what Gen Washington thought of unorganized militias after the Revolutionary war.
“To place any dependence on the Militia, is, assuredly, resting upon a broken staff. Men just dragged from the tender Scenes of domestic life; unaccustomed to the din of Arms; totally unacquainted with every kind of military skill, which being followed by a want of confidence in themselves, when opposed to Troops regularly trained, disciplined, and appointed, superior in knowledge and superior in Arms, makes them timid, and ready to fly from their own shadows … if I was called upon to declare upon Oath, whether the Militia have been most serviceable or hurtful upon the whole, I should subscribe to the latter.[28]”
If past history is any indication, this will prove to be another circle jerk by community leaders but at least they’ll get their fuzzy rub.
Maybe they should wake up the segment of the population doing the most shootings. Then again, if we can’t get them to attend school how can we expect them to attend a gun violence prevention workshop?
Summit? WTF?
More like an abyss than a summit. Anyway, since there’s a “free” (probably taxpayer funded) dinner, I’m in. Hope that I can get a Harvey Wallbanger at the No Name Lounge before dinner is served.
How about “if you’re a felon and get caught with a gun, you’re done” or “3 strikes and you’re out”, or “don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time”…scribe that! No need for some BS summit. Lock the A-holes up and throw away the key.
Somehow, I doubt the people who should register will do so.
Really want to put a dent in gun violence? Resurrect former Chief Joiner, then vote in a conservative commission.
Next, replace the current State Attorney and any in his office who thinks like him.
Then, invoke the famous policy of Sheriff Dale Carson, “Shoot first, ask questions later.’
Mayor Harvey Ward, here is your poster child for a career violent criminal, Itionna Lajancia Nyjah Thompkins, 22. Are we supposed to wait until she commits a crime with a gun or otherwise kills or injures someone? As a minor, she was guilty of THREE VIOLENT FELONIES, plus more crime. Then THREE MORE VIOLENT FELONIES were dropped as she supposedly became an adult. She has been a nonstop criminal for years and is only 22. Is this a fault of her community, the gutless politicians who don’t try to protect us, the weak kneed prosecutors, or the clueless judges like Judge Green?
If the leaders in this community haven’t or can’t figure out what the problems are? (Not Guns) Then what good are they. The meeting will end with everyone patting each other on the back and saying, See you next year. We will have ideas like “The youth have no hope” “No Jobs” “Need something to do during summer” “Need a Publix on the Eastside” did I miss anything. Train police better so they don’t get charged with harassment and let them do their job. Let the police know this community supports them. Send Commissioners City and County out on ride a longs with police for a month with police from 1000 PM – 0300 AM. Maybe that will open their eyes.
The gun queers here and elsewhere keep promoting more and more of them but can’t take care that they don’t show up on open and illegal markets and then wonder why teenagers get them and act like a lot of teenagers do. The leading cause of death of children in the US now is gun fatalities. The weapon of choice of mass shooters is compact semi-automatic rifles which shoot high velocity rounds that explode tissue and organs, with little recoil and large magazines. But hey, we like our deer meat pre-ground.
You’re an idiot Jazzhole. Always trying to take away lawful citizens rights. You must be related to Hitler and what he did to the Jews with the taking away of their guns.
You probably believe the Holocaust didn’t happen either. “He who sacrifices liberty for safety deserves neither”. Put your mask on and go to your safe place you progressive commie Marxist.
I am married to a Jew Mr Pink, which makes my kids Jews to any Nazi, as well as most of my relatives (her family is big, mine small).
Thanks for playing.
I guess it is true and appreciated – The Alachua Chronicle doesn’t restrict free speech.
MSM would never allow the use of the word “queer” on their forums.
Many of us enjoy what we obtain for ourselves rather than what those you pledge fealty to choose to feed you.
I regret the now common usage of many words in public which are now acceptable, including the one I used above. But you will see it in the MSM regularly and mostly used by those self identifying as such. I think that is a mistake.
So…..are they going to round up all the criminal thugs with guns and invite them to the banquet so they can give their input too? Better wear some body armor if you plan to attend.
Since gun charges get dropped for arrested felons, there are no repercussions for criminals illegally having guns in Alachua County. So save taxpayer money by cancelling this charade.
This “summit” may have some relevance if held at the mlk center.
For “gun violence” and all other types of violence to cease, criminals must be punished.
We have both the highest levels of incarceration and the highest levels of gun deaths among developed countries of the world. Your plan isn’t working.
