Residents escape but four cats die in house fire

At approximately  4:27 p.m. this afternoon, Gainesville Fire Rescue crews were dispatched to a residential building fire in the area of 2800 NW 39th Place. Firefighters arrived on scene in just under two minutes and immediately began applying water to the fire and searching for victims. A total of 17 firefighters had the bulk of the fire out within approximately 18 minutes of arrival. Firefighters then began searching for hot spots and ventilating the home. Despite the best efforts of firefighters, four cats could not be saved and did not survive.   

The two occupants were displaced but escaped the fire without injury. The Red Cross is responding to provide immediate assistance and support for our neighbors. This fire is currently under investigation to determine the origin and cause.
