School Board supports staff recommendation to keep “A is for Activist” at first book challenge review
BY AMBER THIBODAUX
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Alachua County School Board voted on its first book challenge review at its January 16 meeting, rejecting an appeal that a parent filed against the Terwilliger Elementary School Library Advisory Council’s decision to keep the book A is for Activist on the shelves of the school library.
The Terwilliger Library Advisory Council’s decision was followed by a district hearing on December 14, and Terwilliger parent Crystal Marull, who filed the appeal, gave a presentation in defense of her request to remove the book from the library. Former school district employee Bessie Jackson acted as an “impartial hearing officer” at the courtroom-style hearing and later recommended to the school board that they vote to keep the book in circulation.
School board discussion
At the January 16 school board meeting, Board Member Tina Certain, who also attended the hearing last month, praised Jackson’s recommendation to keep the book. “I read the book, and I was really shocked that it was being challenged as such… I was kind of rubbed the wrong way with that,” Certain said.
“You know, if you’re a person of color, African American, or anyone that’s different – and to sit through and hear someone just challenge something, almost berate, and say something is not worth being in a school library where children can see themselves in books – we kind of have to all stand up against that,” she continued.
Board Chair Diyonne McGraw agreed with Certain and referred back to a prior remark Certain had made about the amount of staff time it takes to review a book challenge and the costs of the challenges to the school district.
“As Ms. Certain said, it does take up staff time, it does cost – but sometimes this is unfortunately what you have to deal with when you’re in these seats. Of course, we can’t use our personal belief; it’s what’s best for the overall,” McGraw said.
Member Sarah Rockwell made a motion to keep the book, and Certain seconded the motion. The vote to approve the motion was unanimous.
Dr. Marull’s presentation at the district hearing
At the district hearing, Marull presented her case before Jackson and a panel of three district employees: Susan Seigle, staff attorney; Deirdre Talbot, legal assistant for the staff attorney; and Kathy Gowan, program services specialist.
During Marull’s presentation, she was repeatedly interrupted by Jackson for a variety of reasons, including accusations of irrelevancy on the intended target age group for the book and an objection that the author, Innosanto Nagara, wasn’t present in the room to explain his motives or intentions for the concepts presented in the book.
Marull countered by saying that she was tasked with making her case on why she believed the book didn’t belong in the school library and that age-appropriateness was one of her main objections. She also pointed out that the author is a “self-described Marxist [who] says that capitalism is an inherently exploitative and alienating system and that socialism presents a positive alternative.” Jackson interrupted Marull to say that “the author’s admission of his information you’re reading to us is not relevant… He’s not here to justify his intent.”
Marull, who is certified by the state of Florida as a World Language – Spanish educator for grades K-12 and as a Media Specialist for grades PK-12, argued that the book didn’t meet the standards in Florida Statutes 1006.28 and 1006.40 “specifically due to its lack of suitability for student comprehension and its questionable appropriateness of the grade level and age group.”
Statute 1006.28 states, in part, that the instructional materials used in the classroom or made available in the school or classroom library do not meet current guidelines if the material “is not suited to student needs and their ability to comprehend the material presented; or is inappropriate for the grade level and age group for which the material is used.”
In the district hearing, Marull repeatedly asked school district representatives about the school district’s target age range for the book; the district’s Destiny Discover database lists it as reading level 3.1, with an “interest level” for grades K-3. Amazon’s page for the book variously describes it as written for two-year-olds, for 1-to-3-year-olds, for 3-to-7-year-olds, and for grades 4 and up. Marull said the answer from the school district was that it’s appropriate for grades K-5.
Information without context
One of Marull’s many concerns was that children would not be able to understand the context on certain pages. For example, the text on the page below is, “J is for Justice! Yay for Justice! Jia-Jing Jiang. Juanita. Jamal. Justice for the Janitors. Justicia for all!” Marull argued that the book provides no context that would allow a young reader to understand what the author was referring to when he wrote about Jia-Jing Jiang, Juanita, Jamal, and Janitors.
Topics and people in the book are unfamiliar to many adults
Seigle admitted to Jackson that upon her review of A is for Activist, several of the topics and people portrayed in the book were unfamiliar to her; Marull’s challenge was based on the argument that the book is not suitable for elementary-aged children based on its advanced subject matter but would be more suitable for middle or high school students.
Seigle admitted that even after seeing a list of the names of the people pictured in the book, she was still unable to identify a majority of them, and the book provides no additional information about those people.
“I was only able to recognize potentially two faces, Dr. King and Rosa Parks. And as far as I’m concerned, they were not known as Nazi or communist sympathizers,” Seigle said.
Marull wrote on her initial Citizen’s Request Form that she believed the main purpose of the material was “to promote [and] indoctrinate youth into Marxist and socialist ideologies,” which could result in “indoctrination into extreme left-wing ideology.”
According to the Florida Department of Education website, public school library books should reflect an “accurate portrayal of the state’s broad racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and cultural diversity, without bias or indoctrination.”
Seigle agreed that the book did “slant toward the left side of the political spectrum” but argued that activism doesn’t just occur on the left.
“Dr. Marull is an activist herself,” Seigle said. “She’s an activist on the far-right on the topic of banning books, just like the Moms of Liberty are activists on the far-right for their points of view. I suggest if this [book] was an ABC book on far-right-wing activism, it would be acceptable [to Marull].”
The publisher’s description of the book explains that it is “written and illustrated for the next generation of progressives; families who want their kids to grow up in a space that is unapologetic about activism, environmental justice, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, and everything else that activists believe in and fight for.”
In her presentation at the district hearing, Marull went through each page of the book and explained the various activist groups and concepts that were mentioned, including communist groups; militant rebels; LGBTQ terminology and references; and a depiction of the Mexican Zapatista Army, a Marxist guerilla organization that uses a strategy of “civil resistance” to control a substantial amount of territory in Southern Mexico.
Seigle also addressed a prior controversy surrounding the “doxxing” of Marull in which her personal information, including name, place of employment, and voter registration, was published by a reporter at WUFT.
“I take offense at being [accused] of colluding with the media to make her name public. We are a public institution; we are governed by public records laws Chapter 119. The name of Dr. Marull making a book challenge is public record. And if we are asked about that, we must reveal it, or we suffer the consequences of litigation. So there was no collusion; we adhered to the requirements of the law,” Seigle said.
However, Marull pointed out that she was not given the same treatment when she requested the names of the Library Advisory Council members who voted to keep the book on the shelves of Terwilliger Elementary. According to Marull, she repeatedly requested the names via emails sent to Heather Harbour, principal at Terwilliger. Harbour said during a questioning session at the hearing that she didn’t provide the names because a public records request was required before she was legally allowed to disclose that information. Marull said she did make a records request for the names as part of a larger request, but later told Alachua Chronicle that several weeks went by before she was quoted a price of $112.14 in exchange for the information related to the library council. Emails sent to us by Marull confirm this.
Marull: “This highlights a troubling trend”
“This disregard for state selection criteria and subsequent lack of corrective action is particularly concerning when coupled with how this challenge has been managed from the start. The media specialist and principal were reluctant to engage in conversation with me, there has been a litany of procedural errors, the district openly colluded with the media to disclose my identity and political affiliation as an attempt to intimidate me and to deter other parents from engaging with the selection process, and partisanship has clearly been influencing decisions,” Marull said.
“This highlights a troubling trend that needlessly strains the school’s relationship with the broader parent community,” she continued.
Marull told us she has escalated her challenge of the book to the State Magistrate level. Under new State legislation passed last summer, parents have the right to request that the Florida Commissioner of Education appoint a Special Magistrate to hear the case.
The law reads, in part, “The special magistrate shall determine facts relating to the school district’s determination, consider information provided by the parent and the school district, and render a recommended decision for resolution to the State Board of Education within 30 days after receipt of the request by the parent.”
The American Library Association (ALA) past prez is a self described Marxist lesbian whose main goal is LGBTQ+. Furthermore, on the ALA website is a full page dedicated to activism and how to successfully argue against book challenges. Today’s librarians do not educate nor are they impartial. They are humanities majors activists. They only push their liberal agenda. It was the ALA that changed the changed the Laura Ingalls Wilder award because they thought her writings were offensive. So tired of these so called library advocates. They are activists who want to indoctrinate your kids. Period.
The best way for objectors to “A is for Activist” to be effective is to get elected to local boards that decide to present the book. Sure, this is obvious, but activists are just that, active, with time to be activists and get elected via support of their voting bloc. Regular residents do not run for office because they are preoccupied with family, jobs and all the details that fill their lives. Vouchers are good because they broaden the market, but they are reactionary. The only way to take leadership of a public function is to occupy the high seats on the auditorium.
This is exactly why parallel economies that don’t rely on government services are growing day by day. Whether it’s the city, county, state, feds, local utility, medical system, school board or anything in between…once the corporate controlled govt bureaucracies stick their dirty fingers in it’s all but guaranteed to be ruined
Yes, take the education vouchers DeSantis fought for and bludgeon the ACSB budget from a 50% decline in students. Wakeup Wokeville parents, take action now, before it’s too late for your children!
Bravo to Dr. Marull, an activist in the best sense. Maybe the Library Advisory Council should consist of parents, not teachers who are no doubt biased in their evaluation. I hope others continue to challenge these trash books. The more time the Alachua Board is forced to deal with this, the less time they have to mess everything else up.
Typical democrat/liberal crap.
A is for Arrested. That would be more appropriate for this school system.
It should be A is for American, but they could never allow a book like that here.
Dems want to abuse their monopoly skool powers to indoctrinate their Party’s daycare kids into more little shoplifters in their gang infested food deserts, more mentally ill trans groomer mass shooters, etc.
it’s all done to keep job security of gumment workers, NGO slush funds and their campaign “volunteers”. 🤡👹🍦🍦🍦D
“A” is also for Anarchist.
Look around, they’re everywhere. Usually protesting, looting, and demanding compensation for something that never happened to them. Let’s not forget, they usually don’t care much for authority – any aspect of it.
Totally inappropriate for school. What subject does it represent, except an extremest opinion? Not math, science, history, geography, not even a study of political systems, which wouldn’t be appropriate until high school.
The behavior of the Alachua County School Board clearly exemplifies a serious bias in providing reading material to its’ students. There is no question the information in this book targets an age group unable to process what this means. At what point would this politically motivated school board attempt collaboration or seek honest, and respected feedback from those who are also willing to participate in the process? I imagine that had they the moral fortitude, and strength of character to present this choice to all the parents of children in this school, they would be surprised to learn most do not agree with them. They are too weak to exercise a more mature understanding of objections to this trash. Bravo Dr Marull for speaking up for the children infected by this self-satisfying board of degenerates. And too, for speaking up for unequivocal decency, which obviously Ms Bessie Jackson cannot appreciate.
If “A” is for Activist in AC public schools, then “B” should be for Boycott. Parents who care about their children, and don’t want them turning into brainwashed little monsters like those portrayed in the book “1984,” need to pursue home schooling, private schools or charter schools.
100%! Use those vouchers DeSantis fought for, for this exact reason!
I agree w/Dr. Marull, I am a Capitalist, I do not want to live under a Socialistic/Communistic REGIME. It isn’t a Government it is COMMUNISM. TAKE THE BOOK OFF THE SHELVES AND BURN IT.
This is Racism in the reverse, who is being racist now!, huh, c’mon, speak up, we see you, go hide somewhere, it will still find you, you are a racist against white people now.
Really….you must be joking. With three black activists on the school board this is priority?
You Go Dr. Marull, I will support you anyway that I am able too.
So, the “judge and jury” made up of library staff and former staff, decided in favor of itself? Oh, what a surprise!
The Marxist, Leftist ACSB is protecting its own Marxist, Leftist employees and pushing its Marxist, Leftist beliefs – a complete VIOLATION of their Oath of Office to the U.S. Constitution and Florida Consittution.
Someone please write the following books to be installed in Alachua County school libraries:
S is for socialism is stupid
M is for Marxism is for morons
W is for whiners who complain about the fact that they are lucky enough to live in the greatest country on earth, BUT
G is for get the f%*! out if you hate it so much. Put your actions where your mouth is.
A is for activist.
B is for bozo.
C is for communist.
There you have it that’s these folks in a nutshell.
I wonder if Johnny the Walrus is in any of these libraries? I bet they would totally claim that was “Right wing propaganda”, but a book written by an open and avowed communist is not. Color me surprised …
Kudos to Dr. Marull for standing up strong against the unprofessional behavior of the ACSB, and for not backing down despite the blatant and clearly coordinated intimidation and smear tactics from The “Independent” (ha) Florida Alligator and The Gainesville Sun.
I expect the worst from Certain, “Slow-Draw” McGraw, and Rockwell, but the passage that most shocked me was from ACSB staff lawyer Susan Seigle:
When I read that, my immediate thought was “this is supposed to be a lawyer? This person actually graduated from law school?”
Hey, Susie: as your boss (since my tax dollars pay your salary), I have to insist that you keep your hysterics in check in public and stick to the facts, instead of blurting out your ignorance for the world to see.
This hearing is about whether the book met the objective criteria in the law, not about your little fee-fees. Dr. Marull laid out point by point why the book did not meet the standard, and your only response was to try and slander her as a “far-right activist”?I don’t see any evidence of that online, but even if she was what possible relevance does that have to the book being reviewed? Embarrassing.
The fact that these ghouls think keeping explicit drawings and blatantly manipulative, anti-American, pro-Marxist propaganda out of children’s library is an extreme “far right” belief says worlds about their own twisted morals.
Government exists to terrorize and enslave the population.
Of course, we can’t use our personal belief; it’s what’s best for the overall,” McGraw said.
How full of themselves this reckless School Board is . They get way with stuff and now think they are a Judge or God.
Dr. Marull asked me if I knew who to direct her to for the State challenges. I didn’t know but certainly hope she elevates her appeal.
John Birch Society doesn’t have that information?
You are showing your age (and ignorance).
“Commissioner Marden is married to Danielle, with whom he has raised two children. He and his wife are both prior business owners, youth coaches, mentors, and community volunteers. He currently works as a National Development Officer for The John Birch Society and Danielle works for a title agency in the real estate.”

Interesting issue, but keep in mind a couple of things: This book is not required reading, but a book on library shelf. The “activists” it celebrates include one we just had a national holiday to celebrate. “Anti-American”? I don’t think a man with a large part of the responsibility for gaining full rights of citizenship for 15% of all Americans is “anit-American”. As to “socialism”, need we be reminded that we have numerous socialist institutions here, starting locally with UF and ending with our highway system, social security, our military, and medicare.
Would some object to favorable biographies of Phyllis Schafly (sp?) and Barry Goldwater being on those same shelves? Though I disagreed with them, I hope not.
If the challenge has merit, it would be on age appropriateness, but does that mean the book is removed or put on another shelf? The bigger problem to me is that I doubt the K-3 woul give a rip about the subject or graphics. Where’s the bears with hates and ducks with bow ties in bright pastel colors?
You’re more than welcome to see my arguments, and no, they are not against MLK. See complete presentation here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1urD1vOMIg2gQRMaIljbDoGni_kcDdMAt/view?usp=drivesdk
Thanks for that link. I read/scanned all of it, though mostly scanning the “BEST” criteria which I did not understand. A few questions, thoughts in agreement. and some in opposition:
1. It appears that the law does not differentiate between books in the library and required reading. If that is correct, I don’t think that makes any sense and for obvious reasons not necessary to state. Is that correct?
2. The book is not appropriate for K-2 or 3, don’t know about 4 and up. If it is not required reading, and depending on what shelf it is placed on, I think entirely appropriate for a library book.
3. If required reading, it violates recent law by our legislature, but I encourage that non-violently.
4. On the content side of the presentation, you set up indirectly a debate between George Soros (not part of any of this) and Margaret Thatcher, both law abiding citizens and neither one proponents of blatant hate, racism, or other disqualifying opinions, but neither one quiet or non-partisan and strongly opposed and promoted by millions. So what? How does their implied assent or dissent to the book’s subject qualify or disqualify it? It doesn’t in my opinion.
5. Would your linking of the author and expressed opinions in supposed agreement with Marxism – one could argue that many of them could be linked with Christianity as well – and the implication that this should lead to immediate rejection also apply to our institutions and dominate beliefs written largely by slave holders, and thus similarly to be rejected? Guilt by this type of association, when only a few of the opinions – like Zapistats (sp?) whatever that was – should catch that attention, weakens your argument I believe.
6. The law speaks of “indoctrination”, as if that was easily avoidable and only practiced by scoundrels, and not the state legislature. Obviously again, that is not true, and I think an invalid criteria, depending on how odious the indoctrination.
In short, I believe you have a case on the technicality of age appropriateness, though the books placement on a shelf – not required reading – would not alarm me, just as others with non-hateful messages from the right would not either.
PS By inference I think you did criticize MLK. That list of people that I know were largely admirable – Sophie Scholl! – though I never heard of Ella Baker.
I tried twice to add my general comments to this discussion – none of it inflammatory or out of bounds – and both disappeared when I hit “submit”. Is that on my end or the AC?
If you use the word “s0cialism” without modifying it, the automatic moderation algorithm puts it in the Trash folder.
I have submitted a bug report, but I’ve received no response.
🤷♀️
Odd, but thanks.
It’s written for “two-year-olds, for 1-to-3-year-olds, for 3-to-7-year-olds, and for grades 4 and up. Marull said the answer from the school district was that it’s appropriate for grades K-5.”
On a positive note, the target audience, by most measuring standards and the district’s own admission, can only read at a three-year old level anyway. One would think that by the time they’ve gotten to middle or high school their reading comprehension would have progressed more.
Dr Marull needs to get a life and stop her campaign to ban books. Its a really bad look! The books are vetted. Also this book is not that serious. Let it go lady! She’s so concerned about Marxism but she is a fascist!
