Under Board policy, proposed names should be 1) descriptive of the geographical area in which the building is located or 2) the name of a deceased person who has made a significant contribution to education, locally or in general, or to the well-being of the local, national, or international community.

History of the District Office

The building was originally called the Gainesville Graded and High School when it opened at the turn of the 20th century and served students in all grades; it was renamed Kirby Smith Elementary School when it became an elementary school a couple of decades later. The building closed as a school in 1977 and became the district’s administrative building in 1981. While the building was officially designated with the state as “District Office,” the name “Kirby Smith” was commonly used until 2017. At that time, the lettering on the building was removed and a new digital sign was installed.

  • I’d like to have it named after educator Dr. Lougene Hill. Graduated in 1959 from Lincoln High. My principal when I taught at Prairie View Elementary. He passed in 2015. His wife Nancy was also an educator in Alachua Co.

    • Thank you for a constructive suggestion, and not another tongue-in-cheek one like the rest of us! : )

  • Alachua County Public Schools District Office! How about that? Why do we have to make everything about race? Maybe we should name everything the Abraham Lincoln Building!

Now, worthless SBAC (minus 1), why don’t you take on an action to protect the Alachua County students from the young thugs in training you don’t kick out of class? Stop with the smoke screens and diversions!

  • Harvey Ward’s Circus? I have been threatened by Kirby Smith… what a joke! No education is coming out of Alachua County Schools. All a scam on tax payers.

    • “ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) has announced the names of 15 additional Alachua County Public School (ACPS) 2024 graduates who have earned scholarships through the program this year.

The announcement brings the number of ACPS students who have been named National Merit Scholars this year to 21. More local students are expected to be recognized when the NMSC releases its final list of scholarship winners in mid-July….”

  • E.B.E. = Equity Before Education building.

Most know that’s what’s important to them.

  • What a waste of public resources- first solve all the school problems.

  • They may as well just call it the “I’m Sorry Black People Center”
