Senator Moody introduces ‘Halo Act’ to shield federal officers from those who seek to threaten and harass them on duty

Press release from the office of Senator Ashley Moody

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following reports of violence and harassment against federal officers trying to do their jobs, Senator Ashley Moody announced the introduction of her Halo Act to protect them when conducting official duties.

Senator Ashley Moody said, “As the wife of a law enforcement officer, former Attorney General, and now United States Senator, I have always supported and fought for the selfless individuals who protect and serve our nation. I am appalled at the news reports of people harassing and targeting federal officers while they are simply trying to do their jobs, and this must end. I’m introducing the Halo Act to enact criminal penalties for those that threaten or impede these federal officers while they are faithfully executing their duties.”

The Halo Act is modeled after Florida’s Halo Law, which establishes a 25-foot buffer zone around first responders to ensure their safety and allow them to do their jobs without interference or distraction.

Specifically, Senator Moody’s Halo Act would:

  • Make it illegal for anyone—after being told to stay back—to knowingly come within 25 feet of a federal immigration officer who is doing their job if their intent is to:
    • Get in the way or interfere with the officer’s work,
    • Threaten the officer with physical harm, or
    • Harass the officer.
  • Anyone who breaks this rule could face a fine, up to five years in prison, or both.

  • How about protecting your constituents first. Local would be OK, but not the Brown Shirts now operating around OUR country.

  • The problem Moody, is these thugs don’t present identification and many to most even wear masks. How are citizens supposed to tell them apart from gang bangers?

If you had the gonads to stand up to Herr Trump you’d insist on due process, including these “agents” identifying themselves before beating up women, children, and old men on the street.

    • “As a standard practice, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and officers may initially identify themselves as “police” during an encounter because it is the universally recognized term for law enforcement and our personnel routinely interact with individuals from around the world. ICE officers wear badges and carry credentials with their name and corresponding organization. ICE officers identify themselves as immigration officers at the time an individual is placed under arrest or as soon as it is practical and safe to do so.”

      • “..may identify themselves ….” is not the same thing as “…will identify themselves..”

We’ve all seen pics and video of these gangs roaming the streets and they never have identifying badges, certificates, or anything on their vest and almost all of them WEAR MASKS!!

Maybe you’re OK living in a police state with roving gangs of thugs roughing up people on the street without ID themselves, but most Americans aren’t.

  • Sounds like another way for weaponized public servants to remain untouchable and unaccountable for their transgressions against law and the people.

    • How does this prevent holding them accountable? People can take video from 25 feet away, and any physical interference would result in arrest under current law. A warning is required, so people aren’t going to be arrested for simply walking up and asking questions.

      • Hannah, nobody knows who they are!! You OK with unidentified thugs telling you were to stand? Most Americans aren’t. This behavior is an outrage that you have to be some kind of fascist to think it is OK.
