Sheriff warns residents to beware of fraudulent phone calls about missing jury duty

Staff report
ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ASO) is warning residents that scammers are calling and identifying themselves as Sheriff’s Office employees (in a recent instance, the caller said his name was Sergeant Davis). The call came from 352-580-0050, and the caller said the victim had missed jury duty and would have to make a cash payment or go to jail.
Upon calling 352-580-0050, a caller will hear a recorded message that is very similar to ASO’s automated message. It states, “Thank you for calling the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, located at 2621 SE Hawthorne Rd, Gainesville, FL 32641. Please listen closely as our menu items have changed. For the Clerk press 1, for warrants and citations press two, for sex offenders press 3, for all others press 4. If you know your party’s extension, you may dial it at any time. Thank You”.
Anyone who receives one of these calls should hang up immediately and notify ASO at 352-955-1818. No professional law enforcement agency will call you and solicit funds over the phone. For more information on current scams visit https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-avoid-scam
I would like to know what #2 recording is.
That one has been around a while. Low life collecting Christmas money.
Vote Gainey for Sheriff!
Oh, have the free phone calls for prisoners started already?
This just happened to me but they used a new number 1-352-224-9071
‘Sgt Davis’ claimed I had 3 warrants with $900 bond each. It was all a lie.
The detective I spoke with said they stole voice recordings from the real Sgt Davis’ voicemail and are using A.I. to create conversation – you’re not even talking to a real person!
