Shooting incident at Butler Plaza Walmart under investigation

Press release from Gainesville Police Department

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – On April 30, 2025, at approximately 9:55 p.m., officers from the Gainesville Police Department (GPD), along with deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol, responded to a reported shooting at the Butler Plaza Walmart (2900 SW 42nd Street).

Upon arrival, law enforcement personnel immediately worked to secure the scene, locate the suspect, provide emergency medical care to the victim, and safely evacuate employees and customers. Officers and deputies collaborated to clear the large retail space and establish a secure perimeter.

Preliminary witness statements indicate that a verbal altercation involving two men and a woman began outside the store. The confrontation continued inside, where it escalated into a physical altercation. During the incident, the suspect produced a firearm and shot the victim. The suspect fled the scene but later arrived voluntarily at the GPD lobby, where he was contacted by officers.

Gainesville Fire Rescue provided initial on-scene medical aid, and the victim was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital by Alachua County Fire Rescue. The victim remains in stable condition with life-threatening injuries.

GPD detectives and forensic investigators responded and are currently processing the scene. This remains an active investigation. Additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.

The Gainesville Police Department extends its appreciation to our law enforcement and emergency medical services partners for their swift and coordinated response during this critical incident.

  • Well it’s not the Eastside of Gainesville so I can’t wait to see these comments😅

    • Nope. Just another idiot. Like the one in High Springs the other day.
You can take the trash out …

      You get it.

On the bright side, he turned himself in and didn’t run from the PoPo.

    • Don’t worry, we’re well aware they’ve infected western Alachua County too.

  • Have you been to the Butler Walmart lately? It looks like Eastside of Gainesville at 9:55 p.m with the street lights out.

  • Another example of a grown adult unable to self regulated his emotions. Pathetic!

  • More great work by our local LEOs. Let’s see if it’ll be flubbed up by the overpaid law skool grads 🤔🤨🙃

  • What is happening to sleepy little Gainesville? I’m so sorry to hear these almost daily reports of shootings and knifings. It’s a shame but it seems people just cannot live in peace with each other. Glad I live in the country out in the county.

  • Before I vote to secede, I want to know. What exactly does the future county government of the conservative tax free utopia of the proposed Springs County plan to do to stop such goings on before they happen? If you cannot list a plan, you have no plan, and Springs County is a total BS concept. How will you improve over the current Alachua County? I need something much better than “thoughts and prayers, everybody go to church, and worship John Birch.”

  • To prevent this type of crime, Gainesville needs to start prosecuting people who are carrying firearms illegally–ex cons, minors, etc. When Bloomberg did this in New York, it cut the homicide rate in 1/2 in one year. If Gainesville really wants to stop gun violence, this is a good way to start
