Shots fired on NE 11th Street

Press release from Gainesville Police Department

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2020, Gainesville Police Department (GPD) units responded to reports of multiple shots fired at the 400 block of NE 11th Street. After arriving to the scene, GPD officers located a shell casing outside of a home nearby.

Nobody was hurt during the incident and no buildings or vehicles were impacted.

This incident continues the growing trend of shots fired, shootings, and armed robberies in Gainesville. GPD asks its neighbors to remain vigilant and to continue to inform law enforcement if they see or hear anything suspicious.

If anyone has information regarding this incident, please contact GPD Detectives at 352-393-7670, or you can remain anonymous by reporting information to Crime Stoppers at 352-372-7687 or https://www.stopcrime.tv/.

  • One has to wonder how long the public will consider staying “vigilant” as GPD has advised.
    Consider this:
The first records of vigilant in English come from the 1470s. It comes from the Latin word vigilans (meaning “keeping awake”), which is derived from the Latin word vigilare (meaning “to be watchful”). It is related to other words that imply watchfulness (and sometimes potential danger), such as vigil and vigilante.
Having said that, will the current push to defund the police lead to a society more centered on the latter than the former? After all, if vigilant is the origin of the word vigilante, why shouldn’t GPD’s request to remain vigilant also give rise to a local society of vigilantism?
    Stay safe and be watchful.

    • They won’t be responding to the “shots fired” calls
Because they’ll be too occupied breaking up all the
Undocumented Student parties grilling hotdogs & burgers with more
      Than 10people…

  • I’m closing on 10 acres in Gilchrist County tomorrow and moving on Friday. I live about 1/2 mile away from this location. It was nice here when we moved here in 1993 but the war zone is getting too close. I was shot at by an urban individual back in January but GPD declined to arrest because he was a minority. Getting out of Gainesville before my luck runs out.
