Sierra Club Florida’s response to DeSantis’ State of the State

Press release from Sierra Club Florida Chapter

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Following Governor Ron DeSantis’ State of the State address today at the Florida Capitol, Sierra Club Florida Political Director Luigi Guadarrama released the following statement:

“Governor DeSantis is absolutely correct: Florida’s economic success is tied to our environment. His failures on both are well-documented and extensive. Last year, the Governor chose to reject common-sense, bipartisan solutions that would have created jobs and lowered costs, such as a bill encouraging electric vehicle use that would have saved taxpayers $277 million, and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funds that would have pumped $320 million into Florida’s economy. Both these bills and funding would have cleaned our air, cleared our highways, and created job opportunities for the working class.

“Last year, the Governor passed a dangerous anti-freedom agenda that limited the freedoms and financial stability of taxpayers, promoted irresponsible business practices, prohibited local governments from protecting their own communities, and more. This year, the Governor is poised to outdo himself with an even more dangerous and extreme anti-freedom agenda that amounts to nothing more than lip service on the environment and the economy. It is clear that DeSantis has no qualms about sacrificing our economy, freedom, and environment for his personal political gain.”

    • They rape and pillage trees for their Toxic Biomass plant that destroyed Gainesville. Right David?

  • Sierra Club is just a partisan appendage of the Dems, like other “apolitical” NGOs. Electric cars will destroy the planet and just put 3% elites in cars, letting the rest use buses.
Their own statement parrots other non-environmental Dem talking points. 🤡👹🍦🍦🍦🍦D

  • Lots of politic speak, but just unidentified mud being slung. No facts, as usual. Here’s one for the EV lovers. The fast chargers use 350 KW/hr. Just three of them require a full megawatt of electricity, enough for about 500-600 homes. Where will that additional requirement come from, burnt trees and destroyed forests? Maybe coal and petroleum power.

    • Thanks for this info. Nobody talks about these kinds of details. Please write a letter to editor here fleshing out more details on charging stations

  • Electric vehicles are available for anyone who wants to buy one. In fact, dealers are having trouble selling their EV inventory. EVs are expensive, have a limited range, can catch fire if the battery gets wet…homes have burned down from an EV catching fire spontaneously in the garage.

The market isn’t embracing EVs, so the Sierra Club wants government to force us to make the switch.

Thank you, Gov. DeSantis for protecting our freedom to choose the vehicles we PREFER to drive!

As to the Jobs bill, I’m not certain what all that contained, but if it was similar to the federal infrastructure bill that contributed to the terrible Bidenomics we’re all suffering under, I’d say it was a good call to reject that bill, too. Details matter.

  • Total BS. Sierra Club is full of sh!t! They were for the tree burner biomass plant. We will not forget. The planet is just fine, manmade global warming is BS. Solar Precession and our distance to and from the sun which is cyclical is in charge. Great reset is the devil. The WHO & the WEF
Can go to hell and so can anyone who
    Wants a vax mandate.

    • Yep. The closer to the sun, the hotter we get, the further we get from the sun, the cooler…all that CO2 regulation and global warming jargon is psyop fear to steal our freedom and Liberty to advance the planet to global totalitarianism… you mentioned that clot shot, it’s just like in Revelations; “ you will not be able to engage in commerce without the mark of the beast”…we all want to help the planet right? The devil is hiding behind the environment. Do not comply with any vax mandate. They want technology inside your body to determine your carbon footprint and C19 was the perfect cover to implement great reset. “You will own nothing and be happy”…

  • The kids digging up Cobalt for your electric car batteries would like a word with you, but they are too busy dying in their 20s from neurological disorders.

    • Excellent point! Virtual signaling EV promotion comes at the cost of child labor abuses, health problems in vulnerable populations, and premature death. It’s an evil propaganda effort, foisted on well-meaning people who are tricked into thinking EVs are the kinder, gentler mode of transportation.

  • Wonder if they’ve had talks with the former royals and John Kerry and anyone else who has the means to avoid commercial aircraft?
Until then, they can pack sand and choke on my CO2.

  • The Sierra Club is a joke. The Execs of this “non-profit” make upward of $350k. They’ve had major turnover and complaints of toxic work environment as well as a rape allegation. They have zero credibility.

  • They forgot that he also said he would vote for trump if he was the eventual GOP candidate! 🙂

  • Well, actually, I think our DeSantis, has done a lot of good with the balancing the environment and other issues.

I think everyone wants clean water and want to preserve the way we see Florida environmentally.

In many ways I think he has been a leader on this issue in the state.

    • Nice bromide and bed time story Thatguy, but Florida’s waters, air, landscape, and highways are overburdened and the GOP – not just DeSantis, though he’s the latest science denying ignoramus to lead them – continues to remove the guardrails, including local autonomy to deal with these burdens. To start with, every National Academy of Sciences in the world, as well as relevant organizations of scientists endorse the reality of human created climate change and the threat it presents for our – well our kids and grandkids – future. No current scientific organizations oppose that reality.

While we benefit from life on a peninsula of fast moving air and plentiful natural waters, the quantity and quality of both are declining. @ recent studies named Florida as home to the most polluted lakes in America and drinking water ranked 2nd worst. The state agencies tasked with oversight – like the Water Management Districts – are fully staffed now with industry representatives, with no input from common citizen representatives. Previously developments of a certain large size had to be reviewed by the state for it’s regional impact – no more. Our springs – yeah, “Springs County” proponents my butt – are declining and becoming less clear as pressures from rural population growth impact the aquifer on which they depend. As noted by the Sierra Club, the governor and legislature has passed bills limiting the actions of local governments while making it easy to sue them if a company thinks they are costing them money. Helllooooo! No such bill was passed which would have done the same for state government. As to the $320 million DeSantis turned down, while he, not the feds politicized our highways, and by the way relies on the feds for about 1/3 of our state budget –

“Congress in 2021 provided $6.4 billion to states to curb tailpipe emissions and reduce the effects of climate change.

Florida was set to receive $320 million, the third most of any state.

The state Department of Transportation began drafting a plan to add trucker parking at rest stops, which staff said could fix the statewide shortage that kept drivers on the road longer, polluting more, as they searched for a place to stop.

The plan also suggested spending the money on things like electric buses and roundabouts, which reduce the amount of time idling cars sputter out climate-warming emissions at traffic lights….

Florida now stands alone as the only state to say it would turn down the money, federal officials told the Tampa Bay Times. Any mention of the plan was wiped from the state’s website.

When asked about the removal of the draft documents, a spokesperson for the agency said it took them down after the department’s decision to decline participation in the program….”

      • Speaking of idling – why don’t you get the idiot leaders of Gainesville to do something about the traffic lights in Gainesville? Some of them, the idiots, said they would work towards getting them synchronized but the only thing in Gainesville that’s in synch is the commission’s idiocy. Needlessly changing red at intersections that have no cross traffic, having a four-way stop at major intersections; the people in charge shouldn’t be.
That’s Gainesville, inefficient at best, incompetent the rest of the time.
