SR 26 (Newberry Road) closed in both directions near Gilchrist County line due to sinkhole

Press release from Alachua County
NEWBERRY, Fla. – West Newberry Road (SR 26) is closed in both directions near the Gilchrist County line due to a large sinkhole opening. The sinkhole is 35 feet wide, 15 feet deep, and expanding. It is currently on the shoulder, but the road has been determined to be unstable.
This side of the county line or the other side?
May have an impact on how soon it reopens.
If I lived in western Alachua county and did NOT have to be near another place for my health or family over there, I would immediately sell my house and move east of 34th St, the eastern county. Sell while people are still fleeing Blue states, they won’t know about sinkholes.
JK: People forget there are two kinds of sinkholes, some where water goes in, or sinks, some where water comes out, or springs. Some want to give away the geography secret and rename the place Springs County.
26 closed? What a tragedy. Gilchrist citizens cannot go to Gainesville to shop at Walmart. There goes Gainesville’s economy.
The Walmart is better in Chiefland. No one wants to drive to Gainesville’s Walmarts if they don’t have to.
