Staff report from Alachua County Fire Rescue and Florida Highway Patrol releases

HAWTHORNE, Fla. – A 25-year-old man from St. Petersburg was killed in a crash this morning on U.S. Hwy 301 in Hawthorne.

At about 8:29 a.m. on June 19, units from Alachua County Fire Rescue and Melrose Fire Department responded to an accident with entrapment near Love’s Truck Stop (5615 U.S. Hwy 301).

The St. Petersburg man was driving a van northbound on U.S. Hwy 301 in the left lane while a semi driven by a 53-year-old Zephyrhills man was pulling out of an access driveway onto southbound U.S. Hwy 301. The front of the van hit the left rear axles of the semi’s trailer.

The St. Petersburg man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The accident is under investigation, and ACFR reminds everyone to drive safely and wear a seatbelt.

  • It’s my understanding. Loves wanted to put in a traffic light. They offered to pay the 100’s of thousands to do it. But the FDOT killed it because they want 301 to be a mega highway.

  • Per googl maps the accident looks like it happend where that small side road comes out 1/4 mile north of Love’s. Either way it looks like the truck violated the van’s right of way.

  • So the semi pulled out in front of him??? I’ve had that happen to me while driving through there,I already know them MF will though..so I’m always cautious..Hope this guy’s family gets justice..

  • Those damn trucks pull out of that truck stop in front of others all the time, I live here on Hawthorne, I know…

  • US 301 in Hawthorne has been a death trap for too many drivers….the entry and exits onto 301 are confusing and challenging to drivers; speeding through the stop lights by big rigs has been more deadly than an NVA mortar attack on L Z Brillo Pad….the Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce has attempted for years to get our US Congress person to examine and seek corrections for the problems plaguing 301 through Hawthorne….no actions are ever taken…..

  • May God rest this young man and give comfort and consolation to his family and loved ones.

  • The young man, was actually from St Augustine, he worked for a funeral home and was transporting a man’s body to a tissue bank 😢
