Starke woman arrested for displaying firearm during road rage incident at University & 13th

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Katie Jo McClain, 36, of Starke, was arrested early this morning after allegedly displaying a gun during a road rage incident near the intersection of West University Avenue and 13th Street.

At about 1:11 a.m., a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to the Holiday Inn at 1250 W. University Avenue, where the victim said he’d gotten into a road rage incident with four people in a pickup truck and one of them reached for a gun.

The victim said he was stopped in the eastbound direction on West University Avenue, trying to turn into the Holiday Inn, but oncoming traffic prevented him from turning. He said the pickup truck was behind him, and they started to “lay on the horn” because they wanted him to turn. He said he got upset, got out of his vehicle, and yelled at the occupants of the pickup truck; he said all four of the occupants got out of the pickup truck and tried to fight him in the middle of the road. At one point, the victim said, a skinny female wearing a black sweatshirt reached into her back waistband and raised something slightly, and he saw a gun that appeared to be in a holster, causing him to fear for his life.

Another officer found a pickup truck matching the description provided by the victim and conducted a felony traffic stop in the 400 block of East University Avenue.

All four occupants of the pickup truck were detained, and they told officers that there had been a “road rage” incident in the 1200 block of West University Avenue. McClain, who was wearing a black sweatshirt, matched the description provided by the victim.

All of the occupants of the pickup truck reportedly said they had gotten into an argument with the victim after the driver blew his horn at the victim because they wanted him to move. They said the victim got out of his vehicle and walked toward them, yelling at them, and they got out of their vehicle to argue with the victim. They said they eventually calmed down and left, and they were surprised to be stopped by law enforcement.

A search of the pickup truck reportedly produced three handguns and a rifle.

A witness provided video that reportedly showed all four occupants of the pickup truck surrounding the victim, trying to get him to fight and calling him a racial epithet and other derogatory terms.

Post Miranda, McClain reportedly said she could not remember what happened because she was under stress; she also mentioned that she was trying to protect her husband during the incident. She reportedly admitted that one of the guns found in the pickup truck, a pistol in a holster, was hers.

McClain has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She has no local criminal history, and Judge Gloria Walker released her on her own recognizance.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • For her to be charged He first engaged truck and legally was aggressor initiating a Reaction caused by his action

    • I tried to ignore the first ignorant horn. They kept doing it and inching forward like they were gonna ram into me. Revving the motor. Just a bunch of drunk off duty cops from out of county trying to bully me cus I have tattoos everywhere and look like a criminal but I was jus minding my business picking my fiancé up from work

  • Another group of idiots who let their emotions and hurt feelings get the better of them. All they to do was wait for the car to move. And the victim was stupid also for getting upset over a horn blast and getting out of t g e car to confront a group. He could have been shot or killed over a horn beeping. All he had to do was stay in the car and drive away. None of this crap would have happened if people would stop and think before they act.

    • I am the victim in this case. They all had MCCLAIN MOTORSPORTS hoodies on and they were all off duty cops. Besides the one that was arrested. She’s in training

      • If that is true then she should no longer be in training. The other show be on Administrative Leave pending a internal investigation. If they are law enforcement they know better.

        • That’s what GPD said. Look I jumped out because I tried to ignore the horn and they kept on laying on the horn. Of course any man who has a pair is gonna be like yo wtf is your problem. And as soon as I jumped out they were all 4 on me fast. Of course though if you saw the video , these guys all thought they were cops still on shift that’s what cops do is swarm you. I am upset for GPD for not arresting the driver and I felt like they got a pass cus they were cops. Gpd told me there was also alcohol in the car.

          • You could file a complaint with GPD for the officer not doing thier job. They then may have to do something about it. Road Rage with guns, and alcohol is serious, reckless, and no one should get a free pass no matter who they are or claim to be. I get cops like everyone need to time relax and de stress but Firearms 101 – guns and alcohol never mix well. They should know that. I understand too what you are saying when you got out. Its a tough pill to swallow when it comes to pride but I have learned that being quiet and carrying a huge stick approach does work. Good luck with it all.

          • She apparently lived to Stuart area prior to moving north by Google search. Crying Bear is always saying the bad people come from a non existent Springs County. Ge is not taking his meds as usual.

  • 1:11 am.. 36 years old.. what the heck are you doing out that late? Should be at home sleeping not engaging in stupidity in a college town.

    • They were looking for trouble this wasn’t your average road rage incident. I was in the left lane of the 2 lanes on university ave making a left into the holiday inn/piesanos parking lot and I had no choice but to wait because there was oncoming traffic. They could have easily went around me but instead they wanted to be ignorant and lay on the horn and mess with me. And inch forward revving there motor, and I was in a small little 4 door Kia they were in a big 2500 truck. So I jumped out to see what the drivers problem was, and then all 4 jumped out calling me the n word and I’m white let me remind you and I dress like I’m white I don’t act black but I guess people hold judgment because of all my tattoos. Whatever. I will upload the video and post it later. The public needs to see how dirty some cops are. Can’t say that about all of them. But these ones right here definitly are here to abuse the power of the badge. They were drinking, had guns in the car, 3 pistols and a rifle.?god dang ain’t that a little overkill? They were looking for trouble.
