Suspect dead in deputy-involved shooting

BY JENNIFER CABRERA

According to a press release from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, the Combined Communications Center received multiple calls this evening reporting a disturbance and shots fired at 2325 SE 46th Terrace.

Communications Operators could hear gunshots actively being fired as they spoke with a victim. They were also able to relay to responding deputies that at least one person appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound.

Upon arrival, responding deputies were met with gunfire and returned fire, striking the suspect. Deputies immediately rendered emergency medical care and carried the suspect to an awaiting ambulance, where he succumbed to his injuries on scene. Simultaneously, other deputies on scene located a victim suffering from a gunshot wound and were able to provide treatment until the victim was transported to a local hospital.

Because deputies were involved in the shooting, the investigation into the events and timeline that led to it will be conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. As a matter of policy, the Office of Professional Standards will conduct an investigation into whether the policies of the Sheriff’s Office were followed. The deputies involved have been place on administrative leave pending the outcome of the parallel investigations.

The Sheriff’s Office said that more information will be made available on Monday.

  • I just hate it when that happens. Maybe a social worker or a psychologist could have asked the shooter to put his weapon down. …… Yeah right !!!!

  • I’m sure the famous race attorney who has a certain knack for showing up at any opportunity will be making a statement soon.
On second thought, he probably won’t. Gainesville, Florida isn’t a big enough soapbox and doubtful he could get his multi-million dollar settlement for suing local law enforcement.
