SW 20th Avenue shooting leaves man with life-threatening injuries

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – At about 4:37 a.m. this morning, Gainesville Police Department officers responded to an apartment complex in the area of 3500 SW 20th Avenue after receiving a call about a shot heard and a person lying on the ground. Officers found an adult male with a gunshot wound to his upper body; the victim was transported to UF Health Shands with life-threatening injuries.

The suspect has not been located; however, detectives are actively working on leads for the suspect. Anyone with information regarding this incident is please asked to call 352-955-1818.

  • Didn’t the GPD chief just say that gun shots are down 47% this year? I guess they don’t count the homicides?

  • Gun summit working really well this week and the weekend isn’t even here yet.

    • I went back and looked at the Gun Violence Summit. The act of addressing violent crime is of course a needed one, but unfortunately that wasn’t what the Summit was about. It was about slandering citizens who own firearms, and other woke BS – not about changing a Godless, evil culture. For example, here’s a quote from Duncan-Walker:
“Centering youth voices is critical because I believe the children will bring us solutions.”
What an ignorant world view she has! Sure, let the kids tell the adults what should be done…works every time.

      • I’m making a wild guess here, but aren’t you against tighter gun control laws, which makes you an advocate for the failing gun violence policies in Gainesville, Florida, and America, which are a function of how easy it is for anyone – criminal or not, kid or not, nutjob or not – to get one. You tell us how to solve the crisis you and others like minded created. Tougher enforcement isn’t the answer, nor are more guns, since these metrics are what the US already leads the developed world in, along with deaths by gunfire – highest killer of kids here too, buddy.

        • There’s a demographic in this city that is responsible for 99% of the shootings and gun crimes here in this town. They refuse to put the statistics out on that because it’ll show you who is guilty yet they want everybody else to feel bad and feel like they’re at fault somehow because they’re a responsible gun owner and a Law Abiding Citizen. I’ll go along with their equality when they start pointing the finger and broadcasting who the real problem is and not trying to pull the wool over everybody’s eyes. They’ll never do it, they’ll only continue to make excuse after excuse and blame it on everything from lack of things to do to social injustice.

        • Jazzman, Please read (and hopefully understand) the Second Amendment to the US Constitution. If you don’t understand it, people here are willing to help you, with words you do understand. It is always fascinating to read comments for “gun control” with absolutely no reasonable explanation of just how it would reduce criminal activity.

        • I am taking it that you agree with Duncan-Walker….Have you read ‘Lord of the Flies’?

        • #1, the laws have only gotten more stringent since the ’60s when “gun violence” was almost non-existent. You could own a fully automatic gun back then, and there were no mass murders with guns, just predominantly mob and gang-on-gang violent crime.
#2, I addressed the Culture issue, which Godless LEFTISTS created. That is the reason for the systemic violence, not Constitutional gun ownership.
#3, More guns in the hands of the “good guys” is the immediate answer. Long term, return our Culture to a culture that fears and reveres God and we will have a lot more respect for life, and maybe even love each other.
#4, Criminals don’t follow the laws. None of what you advocate fixes anything, but it does pave the way for tyranny.

  • That’s within visual range of the UF Hilton where they had the “gun violence” summit.

  • This shooting. The other day a shooting at a barbershop. Thanks to the fascist Republicans who passed a law permitting any fool to conceal carry a gun without a permit and training.

    • Darn Paulie, if only those “fascists” would pass a law against shooting people all our problems would go away.

    • I’m not sure if you’ve heard this or not Paulie but criminals don’t care what laws you pass or anybody else for that matter. They’re called CRIMINALS because they commit CRIMES!

    • You’re an idiot if you think the majority of those committing the “neighborhood” shootings are going to go through training and get a permit. Even before the recent legislation they didn’t care about the laws.

    • Are you brain dead? You think bad actors weren’t carrying concealed weapons before the law was changed? lol so ignorant and naive.

    • You should know the definition of a word you use before you use it…Fascist: ‘a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition’….I would think that the weaponization of the Justice Department and the IRS as well as the forced mandating of masks would qualify as fascism….Literacy and the accurate use of language is important…don’t you think?

  • Hey City Commission- how’s the gun violence summit plan panning-out so far?!
I’m no psychic but it’s my prediction that the shootings are gonna go on and there’s nothing about that ‘smoke & mirrors’ summit that’ll stop them.
Especially with what’s left over of GPD after Lauren Poe & ASO after Clovis.

  • The desire to reduce violence of all kinds, including gun violence, is a goal shared by most of us. We differ on how to get there – we disagree on what would be effective.

Guns are a tool, like a knife, a hammer, or a crowbar. Tools can be used for good or for evil, depending on the intent of the user.

Guns can give a smaller, weaker would-be victim a chance to survive an attack by a violent criminal. Most women would lose in a fight with a male attacker, as would most older men against a younger man. Guns can be life-saving equalizers.

Taking away guns from those who follow the law empowers and emboldens those without a conscience. They can take what they want, unafraid of their victims. But when law-abiding citizens are possibly or likely armed, criminals have a deterrent to attacking – they consider the possibility that they may be shot instead, which is why so many mass shootings happen in gun-free zones. It’s a no-brainer that a criminal would rather attack those who can’t defend themselves because government has taken the means of defense away from the intended victims already.

Disarming a population also makes them ripe for abuse by their government. We are not for a lawless free-for-all when we enthusiastically support the right to bear arms. We are for a check on evil, whether that threat comes from individual criminals, gangs, or a corrupt government. A disarmed populace is a vulnerable population.
