The Hipp Gallery unveils Solo Exhibition by Keiaria Williams
Press release from Hippodrome Theatre
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Hippodrome Theatre Art Gallery proudly announces the upcoming solo exhibition, “The Mother Portraits: A Journey through Mugshots; 2002-2003,” featuring the evocative works of Southern artist and educator Keiaria Williams. The exhibition will run from January 5 to February 1, with a special Artwalk event on Friday, January 26, 2024, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
About the Exhibit: “The Mother Portraits” is a deeply personal odyssey that delves into the intricate layers of Keiaria Williams’ existence as an observer to her mother’s tumultuous descent into the shadows of substance. The collection of sketches, presented as a criminal archive, invites viewers on a poignant journey through the complexities and depths of a woman ensnared by the relentless grip of addiction.
As both seeker and storyteller, Williams navigates the emotional terrain of a fractured relationship. The criminal archive becomes a repository of shared history—a sacred ground where solace is sought. The fragments within these archival records unveil the contours of a mother’s journey, encouraging viewers to explore themes of resilience, loss, and the delicate dance between connection and detachment.
About the Artist: Keiaria Williams, a Southern artist and educator based in Florida, holds a BA in sculpture from The University of Florida. With a multidimensional artistic practice blending metals, fabric, photography, and diverse mediums, Williams has shared her expertise at institutions such as The Harn Museum of Art, Flagler College, and Penland School of Craft. As the recipient of the 2023 Society of Inclusive Blacksmiths scholarship and an apprentice under local artist Leslie Tharp, her work is currently represented by Putrid Gallery.
Join us in this emotional journey through “The Mother Portraits” and explore the profound storytelling of Keiaria Williams.
It’s amazing to me people will subject themselves willingly to such ugly visuals. It’s more than just pure masochism.
If you want to see something horribly ugly go look at the sculpture next to the county offices.
Imagine going into debt to get a bachelors in art … LoL
It’s appropriate there’s an exhibit about addiction in Gainesville. It’s big business in several industrie$ 🤑🤑🤑
