As good a place as any to highlight the ridiculous process by which our presidential elections are decided – by the Electoral College where all but 7 votes in two states (Nebraska and Maine) are in winner take all states. If you haven’t noticed, this means that every year the campaigns target less than 10 states and ignore the rest of us. In fact, close to half of most voters could stay home and it wouldn’t affect the outcome. Of course another downside is the chance that the popular vote loser nationally would win, which happened in Bush 2000 and Trump 2016.
Since the EC is in the constitution – but not the winner take all in the states part – it is unlikely that we will get rid of it. We could mitigate for it’s worst aspects by getting rid of the winner take all state contests in favor of representative allocation of each states vote. Still not perfect, but a big improvement which would make candidates seek votes in all the states and restore the importance of voting in those states. This should be non-partisan as we all suffer from another election about “swing states” and the hell with the rest of us.
The President is NOT our representative, the President PRESIDES over the Union of States, who elect the President. Your Representative is in the US Congress, and to a small degree after the 17th Amendment, so are your Senators.
“Popular vote” means that election fraud in CA, NY, IL, and other locations would destroy the Union in an ugly war.
That’s a bunch of fascist Republican baloney. Get rid of the electoral college and elect POTUS by popular vote, or at least get rid of the winner take all state contests in favor of representative allocation of each states vote. The way is is now, POTUS is elected by the minority: every election a handful of states decide the vote while the rest of us get ignored. Screw that.
Phat Cammack does not “represent” me in any shape. form, or fashion. Her fascist MAGA views are the polar opposite of everything I believe in.
The two Rethuglican Senators in Washington do NOT represent me, they disgust me with their failed fake “conservative” policies.
Gerrymandering of red districts by the Rethuglican majority in Tallahassee need to be stopped, too.
I did not advocate for a popular vote, since the EC is in the constitution and we will not practically ever get rid of it. How electors are selected however is not in the constitution and is left up to the states. 2 of them currently allocate electors based on the votes they get and are not winner take all states. Clearly that method is constitutional, so your pronouncement – assuming makes any sense at all – has nothing to do with the ability of the states to change their methods.
I have laid out the obvious reasons why the current system – almost all states are winner take all – sucks and you have not responded to that at all. Let me know when you are able to address the pros and cons of the 2 systems currently used by the states and why you are apparently OK with 7 states being the sole focus of our presidential campaigns every 4 years, the complete insignificance of California – or Texas’s – minority party increasing their vote by 20% while 20k votes in Wisconsin changes history, and the fact that 1/3 of our last elections were won by the guy who voters rejected.
PS No one of substance, including the GOP, agrees with you that significant fraud occurred in the 2020 election. Only Trump stooges buy the crap that guy is selling.
PS The above is addressed to TruthB.
