“There’s not any significant change that’s going to come from that at all”: Alachua County School Board votes 4-1 to approve LGBTQ+ History Month proclamation
BY JENNIFER CABRERA
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – At tonight’s Alachua County School Board meeting, the board voted 4-1 to approve a proclamation for LGBTQ+ History Month proposed by Member Sarah Rockwell.
The proclamation, shown below, describes the risks to LGBTQ+ youth nationwide and pledges that the district will continue to prohibit harassment and bullying and provide training on awareness of the needs of LGBTQ+ students.
After Rockwell read the proclamation, Chair Tina Certain asked for a motion to adopt it, “as we’ve done with other proclamations in the past.” Rockwell made the motion, then there was a moment of silence before Certain said, “I’ll second it.”
Abbitt: “We have more important things to do”
Member Kay Abbitt said she would like an explanation for how proclamations are brought to the board. Reading from the proclamation, she said, “One part of it says, ‘Whereas providing a high-quality education is essential for allowing LGBTQ+ youth and teens to reach their potential.’ Providing a high-quality education for kids in our east side schools is also important, and so if a board member can just have a proclamation for a group, then every month we would be bringing up these proclamations–and I would bring one up for our kids on the east side that are struggling, that don’t have the certified teachers in the classrooms that they need. And so it’s not that I’m against this, it’s just that I want to know how proclamations are brought up.”
Abbitt continued, “I think proclamations should not be a part of what we do; we have more important things to do.” She said that a similar proclamation was made in the fall of 2021, and it wasn’t voted on: “And so these are random; they just come up at random times by random board members. I want to focus on educating our students, all of our students. And so my stance on proclamations, regardless of whatever proclamation it is, is that I’m going to vote against every proclamation from here on out because I don’t think that’s what our job as board members is to do.”
McGraw: Proclamations don’t require a vote
Board Member Diyonne McGraw said she thought proclamations should not require a vote: “They’re read, but they don’t have to be voted on, according to other attorneys that I’ve reached out to… October 19, 2021, the same proclamation was shared, and there was no vote.”
Board Attorney David Delaney said proclamations are handled on a “case-by-case basis, somewhat at the discretion of the board chair and the superintendent… At least some boards have said that it’s better to go out and have a vote so everybody’s stance is clear.”
Certain said that since she’s been on the board, they’ve had the two proclamations for LGBTQ+ History Month and at least one on safe storage for guns. She said it took her four years to get the gun safety proclamation on the agenda. She added, “So I respect everyone’s opinion as to how they feel about it, if you don’t support it. There was another issue that came before the board that I didn’t support.”
Abbitt: “There’s not any significant change that’s going to come from that at all”
Abbitt clarified, “It’s not that I don’t support LGBTQ; it’s not that, it’s what I just said: there are issues… There’s not any significant change that’s going to come from that at all. The gun violence–of course, any responsible adult wants guns to be kept in a safe place where kids don’t have access to them… I guess what I’m saying is there’s so many pressing issues we need to be dealing with that can have an effect on the lives of kids.”
Rockwell said the same proclamation has been made in the past without a vote, “so I expected it to take, you know, the minute and a half that it took to read the page; I did not expect this to take away time from the other important work that this board does. But at the same time, I think that there is an importance to showing support for various marginalized communities within our larger student body.”
Rockwell: “It does make a statement that, as a board, we care about those members of our community”
Rockwell continued, “When Black History Month comes around, perhaps that’s another thing that we would want to make a proclamation for, even though it won’t change our African American History standards. And so making this proclamation will not change some of the state statutes that make it harder for us to support our LGBTQ youth and faculty and staff members, but it does make a statement that, as a board, we care about those members of our community, and we are going to do the best we can by them within the confines of the statutes. And I think that when we’re talking about a group of students that has extremely high suicide rates, that is an important statement to make.”
During public comment on the motion, Jane Spear said it was not a “random proclamation” but a national initiative. She added, “I tell you what this will change… Your support of this will change how parents, teachers, and children feel about coming to school or sending their kids to school or being a teacher in this school, if they know that you all are supporting them… This proclamation is very important, and I will be sorely, sorely disappointed if I don’t see support from this board.”
The motion passed 4-1, with Abbitt in dissent.
Rockwell needs to review district policy.
The district already prohibits harassment and bullying.
Have you noticed that when they are doing their political garbage, they have face diapers on, but when it is real school business, they show their faces?
Considering Sarah Rockwell has worn a mask at every school board since the pandemic, your gumshoe theory is as weak as your efforts in swallowing horse de-wormer to combat COVID.
Meanwhile countless children are “graduating” public schools while being unable to even read their lame proclamation. Most teachers have forgotten (or never learned) how to teach, and are simply leftist activists hell-bent on indoctrinating children. Get your kids out of public schools.
Abbit should have a proclomation for obesity. It seems to be a big problem on that Dias. What examples they are setting for our children’s health. #BBW
Liberals are a cancer to society.
You’re wrong, conservative fascists are the cancer to society.
Look at you….You must have been ‘educated’ in the local schools considering your limited understanding of a basic vocabulary word. Look up fascist….
America is a failed state on its death bed, obsessed with woke perversions and promotion and glorification of every sort of deviant behavior, all the while our infrastructure is collapsing, our large cities become overwhelmed with crime, and our educational system devolves into a worldwide joke. I wonder if this masked porker Sarah could answer the simple question: :”What is a woman?”
More like a beached whale.
Anyone remember? “One nation under God “ ?
This is complete BS and is meant to indoctrinate the students. I will never celebrate this perversion.
Indeed, there is a huge difference between being tolerant of perverted behavior and celebrating such behavior, which amounts to encouraging more such deranged behavior. The far left woke psychos act to endorse and legitimize abnormality and degeneracy because they feel more at home in a world of freaks, being themselves a gang of freaks. America — now a coast to coast freak show, and you don’t even have to go to a carnival to see the so-called “fat lady,” the “dog faced boy” or similar oddities as they are now everywhere and in your face.
Thousands of years of man/woman.. and since Obama “well, there are more than two genders”. Gtfoh.
You are right… absolutely a gang of freaks. I’d add freaks with substantial mental illnesses. We need to increase/open state operated mental institutions all over this country and lock them ALL up.
And what’s next? Proclamation for drag shows?
And who is that masked troll bringing it up?
Good lord….Get on with the proper education of the kids and leave this woke virtue BS to the attention seekers…..oh-wait….
These idiots have nothing better to do than continue to stir the woke problem that was caused by the left. Most people don’t care about the private lives of others, but resist having it shoved in their faces, especially by inept, under educated politicians. The alphabet soup they keep stirring didn’t exist before Obama.
I Was in the understanding that the alphabet people were leaving, Florida due to our laws, so why do we need this in our school system?
DeSantis needs to remove the four. It’s none of a skool’s business what kids think about their bedroom or backseat preferences. Only the parents should discuss it, with the adults they choose to discuss it with them, but not in school.
The national DNC is grooming childhood mental illness so they’ll be future Dem voters. That’s ALL they care about. Fact.
Hogtown is becoming more like Sodom and Gomorrah everyday! Jesus is our only Hope!
Amen!
AMEN JM
Proclamation: ‘Whereas providing a high-quality education is essential for allowing LGBTQ+ youth and teens to reach their potential.’
EXCUSE ME!!! Isn’t that the mission for ALL children? What is it with progressive liberals? Why are they so ignorant and want to drag everyone else down to their levels? Teach the subject matter. It’s a parent’s responsibility to teach an indecisive child whether they’re boys and girls, not the school district. If this group of people can’t stop meddling in parents’ roles within the household they need to be removed.
Don’t forget, Halloween is in October as well.
THESE POS’s NEED TO BE EXPELLED. THIS IS NOT EDUCATION. TAKE THEM TO THE LIBERTY TREE AND SHED THE BLOOD OF PATRIOTS AND TRAITORS.
I want a “Caucasian, identifies as male, heterosexual, employed, believe in God and Constitutional rights month.”
Or at least a proclamation affirming there’s nothing wrong with it.
Florida’s schools have a very poor record in meeting national standards. Perhaps they should focus on why Johnny can’t read.
Under DeSantis FL schools have taken the #1 spot in the nation! This is according to US News and World Report. There is still work to do as the primary and secondary public schools ranked #14, but the competition initiated by the voucher program may help improve the quality of the public schools. If not, they will die from starvation.
Abbitt: “…I want to focus on educating our students, all of our students. And so my stance on proclamations, regardless of whatever proclamation it is, is that I’m going to vote against every proclamation from here on out because I don’t think that’s what our job as board members is to do.”
When a proposed proclamation must be run by the Board’s attorney for comment, then the proclamation process just might be outside the Board’s job description which used to be education.
October should be Kay Abbitt Month for taking a stand based on reason and sanity.
“Abbitt: “There’s not any significant change that’s going to come from that at all”
So….why do you waste time and resources on it? Wokism is the Lefts new ‘religion’.
She’s against this crap, the only sane one . Don’t hate on Mrs Abbitt. She has done a Lion’s share of work as a Principal and community servant to our east side children.
Alachua County School Board Member Sarah Rockwell has a pathological obsession with the sex-lives of underage children and it’s extremely creepy and disturbing.
Instead of actually doing anything to improve the substandard public education in this county, this useless, attention-seeking potato wastes everyone’s time making these “proclamations”.
Try doing your actual job for a change and keep tripe like this on your Instagram instead.
Don’t focus on her. It’s the demented people in her district who keep electing her.
She is a symptom of the problem. If it wasn’t her, another fool in the same mold would be on the Dias.
School board elections are county-wide. While candidates must live in their district, everybody votes on every seat.
Just proof that although liberal lunacy is concentrated within certain pockets of Alachua County, there is clear evidence it exists countywide.
It, like the southeast United States, has no borders…at least not one it cannot permeate.
Oops, Southwestern United States. Geography, maybe that’s something the district should focus on.
I stand corrected – good to know. Thank you Jennifer.
That the school board is allowing these perverts to have their poison in our schools is utterly, completely, disgusting. It is the responsibility of parents to teach their children what they want them to know about sex, not some crazed bunch of far left morons.
Don’t they support a county-funded after school bath house for the kids? Or drilling holes between the boys’ bathroom stalls to fully facilitate the LGBT lifestyle? I guess they probably need a little more time.
Everyone needs to look at the “BIG” picture, all students have the right to be educated in all public schools. In addition, free of bullying, no matter what their sexual orientation is. They’re there to learn, and not be placed in harm’s way. Parents need to teach their kids to LOVE God, themselves, and others. Remember the golden rule…. Do unto others as you would have others to do unto you. This world would be a better place if everyone minds their own business.
Education should illuminate accomplishments, not sexual proclivities.
Someone needs to get this School Board into reality. How about a chart that shows each schools grading and rating 10 years ago and each year up to present. The downgrade in the schools rating is deplorable and reflects the ability or lack thereof to get on the right track. I know of some that have done from an A to a D . What in the heck is up with that? Starting with DR Wasteful they should resign is shame .
Groomers gotta groom.
These degenerates shouldn’t be allowed 50 feet near a school let alone running one.
