“This is Florida”: Man charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and intent to sell marijuana
Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jaylen Jacquez Brown, 23, was arrested last night and charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, and possession of marijuana with intent to sell.
At about 10:24 p.m. last night, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy pulled over a Dodge Charger in the 500 block of NW 75th Street because the window tint appeared to be darker than the legal limit; the tint was measured at 5%, darker than the legal limit of 15% or 28%, depending on the window.
The deputy reported that he smelled marijuana coming from the car and noted a green leafy substance “strewn throughout the vehicle” that was identified as marijuana.
A probable cause search of the car reportedly produced 38.2 grams of marijuana, two scales, and a handgun with two magazines and 36 rounds of ammunition.
Post Miranda, Brown reportedly said the marijuana was his; when asked why he had the gun, he reportedly said, “This is Florida” and added that he needed it for protection.
According to court documents, Brown has lived in the area his whole life and has no criminal convictions. Judge Meshon Rawls set bail at $100,000.
Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
That’s a little harsh for weed and no criminal history. You do need a gun for protection. He should of said this is Gainesville and maybe the lawman would of let the gun charge slide.
At least he was honest. $100k bail for Pot?
No, Beavis. For carrying a deadly weapon while stoned and dealing drugs. Should be charged with DUI too.
Watch your mouth Karen.
Rawls just gave a $30,000 bail to a guy for stealing at Marshalls and Hot Topic who had several previous felonies that included stealing $11,000 worth of candles. This seems odd. A person with a criminal history gets a lighter sentence. I am not defending this guy . He deserves this but the judge seems unstable with the sentencing.
We aren’t Dem skools teaching youth how to set an alarm clock on their phone?
Doesn’t sound like they taught you how to use English, so…
Ain’t tinted windows grand?
Bail makes no sense. Barely more than ounce of pot and no indication the gun was stolen or otherwise illegal. Stopped for dark auto glass? No priors?
