TRENTON, Fla. – At a press conference today, Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) provided more details on two shootings at Ginnie Springs that killed one person and injured three over the Memorial Day weekend.

Sheriff Bobby Schultz said that at the time of the shooting Friday night, there were at least 20,000 people and maybe as many as 30,000 at the park’s campground: “It was more like a rave party than it was a campground.” He said GCSO’s resources were “depleted very quickly” during the investigation of the first shooting, so Florida Department of Law Enforcement took over the investigation of the second shooting.

GCSO Sergeant Benita Rolling

GCSO Sergeant Benita Rolling said the first shooting happened at 12:39 a.m. Saturday morning, near the bathhouse at Beaver Landing. Koty Edward Stewart, a Jacksonville resident, was found deceased at the scene by responding deputies.

The investigation determined that two opposing groups had engaged in two separate disputes that turned into physical fights, an hour or two before the shooting; one was reportedly over a parking spot at a campsite. Witnesses told investigators that about an hour after the altercations were resolved, Stewart was shot and killed.

Dallas Jordan Watts

Dallas Jordan Watts, 21, of St. Mary’s, GA, was arrested at the scene for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and resisting an officer without violence. He is being held at the Gilchrist County Jail.

Fisher Dalton Watts

An arrest warrant was issued on Saturday night for his brother, Fisher Dalton Watts, 18, and Fisher was arrested in Camden County, GA, on Sunday afternoon and charged with first-degree murder. He is awaiting extradition to Gilchrist County.

FDLE Agent Will Porter

Will Porter, the Special Agent in charge of the FDLE Gainesville Field Office, said the second shooting was at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night; during a large fight involving multiple subjects, a suspect shot into the crowd and hit three innocent bystanders who were not involved in the fight. Porter said one of the victims is in “very serious condition” at this time; the other two were treated and released with minor injuries. Porter said FDLE is not ready to release any other information about the victims, but they have developed suspects in the case, and their investigation is ongoing.

Sheriff Schultz: “We’re going to investigate them, we’re going to hunt them down, and we’re going to put them in jail and hold them accountable.”

Sheriff Schultz said, “There’s a lot of things I can control in Gilchrist County, but the one thing that I can’t control is who comes here. I can’t control how much intoxicants that people consume. I can’t control the type of people who comes to Gilchrist County. But you can rest assured, while I can’t control those things, what we can control are people like this [holding up the booking photos of the two suspects] that come into our county and wreak havoc here, and we will pursue them. We’re going to investigate them, we’re going to hunt them down, and we’re going to put them in jail and hold them accountable. That’s what happened. I can’t control what other people do. But I can certainly control, once they make a poor decision, of what we’re going to do.”

Undersheriff Robert Willis

Undersheriff Robert Willis said the Sheriff’s Office has been dealing with an “escalation of problems at that location for years… The density at that location, and… the excess and open use of intoxicants there is surely a recipe for disaster, no matter where it is… That place was a disaster as far as a crowd control situation.”

Willis said that both the Watts brothers have criminal histories in Georgia.

Increased presence planned for Independence Day weekend

Schultz said that his agency and Gilchrist County Fire Rescue responded to 89 calls for service in the park and conducted 98 traffic stops between May 23 and May 27 this year. He said the agency is planning to have an increased presence at the campground for the Independence Day weekend: “I don’t want it to appear to be an armed occupation on the northeast side of Gilchrist County, but I’m not going to say that that’s been ruled out as an option. There will be a heavy presence of Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office, as well as other agencies that will be doing everything we can to prevent this type of activity from happening again.”

Schultz thanked the many agencies that assisted with the investigation, including Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, Florida Highway Patrol, Gilchrist County Fire Rescue, Gilchrist County Emergency Management, and the 8th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office. Other agencies that offered or provided support were Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, Dixie County Sheriff’s Office, Levy County Sheriff’s Office, and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and High Springs Police Department also provided traffic enforcement on the Alachua County side of the roads leading to the springs.

Both investigations are ongoing, and GCSO and FDLE urge anyone who may have taken any photos or videos over the weekend to contact the agencies. Information from the Friday night shooting can be sent to Sgt Rolling at 352-463-3410, and information from the Saturday night shooting can be sent to FDLE at 386-462-9975.

  • Whew! Thank goodness they weren’t arrested in Alachua County. They would have been released ROR by now.

    • They within the 8th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.

  • If I remember correctly, there’s some holes in the springs that could be used to prevent this from happening again.
If they don’t want to muddle the springs, there’s some good size critters in the river that would enjoy taking care of a dead carcass. Just too bad the Santa Fe doesn’t flow north.

  • This is shocking to read. After years of getting my local news primarily from the Alachua Chronicle, I had assumed crime was nonexistent in the surrounding red counties.

    • Now Jed, you know it’s all good until the outside trash floats into our great county!

      • True that, Stvee. “There were at least 20,000 people and maybe as many as 30,000 at the park’s campground”: avg-25,000. Because of 2 people, 24,997 people and a great place to enjoy in Gilchrist County are on the hot seat for changes. Isn’t that the way it always works. Just pathetic. Hang them from a tree at Ginnie and let the vultures have at them.

    • Comparing with that left wing schiffhole that is Gainesville?🤣 The trash in Gainesville live there, these pieces of human excrement came from out of state! He((, the guy they killed was from Jacksonville!

  • It should be declared a nuisance and shut down on memorial day or any of the holiday when you have this nonsense going on it’s a shame that Aholes mess up everything

  • So, let me get this straight: in 4 days, there were 187 police interactions with the public? Shut that hell hole down!

  • Culture clash or gang wars? You know the types, their demeanors, the disregard for authority or respect for others.
If I was a betting person, I’d wager one of the two brothers got called something by someone else and got his feelings hurt. Typical gang culture from the looks of that 18 year old’s ink. They should use a potato peeler and take that off his neck and give him a haircut while they’re at it. If his feelings were the one’s that got hurt, he’s really gonna hate how his butt feels after a month or so in Raiford.

  • Ginnie Springs is a private park. If this report is correct, the owners should never be letting 20,000 people in. Isn’t there some kind of fire code limit of occupancy? Of course, at $15 a head admission, they made $300,000 in a day. The owners should be fined and held partially responsible for the death/injuries… or at the very least pay a fee to the sheriff’s office for making them work overtime. Sheez.

    • It was $25 per day on the weekend for a day pass, $40 per night (2 night minimum Friday on). Also, they weren’t having waivers signed or scanning IDs on Saturday, (my experience and several others, at least).

  • Look at where they are from. St. Marys, Ga. You can almost smell the meth by looking at their photos. They are violent criminals in which Dallas has agg assault, agg. Battery, and robbery and Fisher is no stranger to gun charges. Ginnie Springs should gave a cap on the amount of people allowed. They are just as responsible for letting the alcohol and drugs flow in their park. I’m sure you find some McClenney blood mixed in this mess.

  • Perhaps when the springs turn red the owners of Ginnie Springs will finally give it up and sell the whole out of control disaster to the state of Florida, (Welcome to Ginnie Springs State Park) ~~~~~~~

  • I think that $15. x 20,000. is 3,000,000. dollars, of course calculator is getting old, and my brain cannot count that I, but, it looks right anyway.

    • Time for a new calculator. It is $300,000. $10 x 20,000 would be $200,000 plus another $100,000 ($5 x 20,000). Still a nice take for one day.

      • True. They’re making buckets of cash watching the idiots see who can be the bigger idiot.
        Definitely not a bad gig.

      • Thanks Kevin, I believe that it was the one using the calculator, that got confused, but, you explained it very well.

  • sad truth is ginnie needs to raise admission prices to seperate the men from the boys and keep these goons in south Georgia

    • Everyone who enters should have to submit an ID or a copy of an ID because if they’re not from that county they should be put under surveillance people that visit that place daily are the ones who suffer

  • Used to be a nice place to take the family. Not anymore sadly.

  • These young men since they want to take a life should spend their lives you can’t give life back I don’t know why they try to play God
