Traffic delays expected in 100 block of NW 8th Avenue Tuesday morning for dedication of sign honoring Charles Chestnut III

Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gainesville Police Department is warning residents to expect traffic delays on Tuesday morning, December 12, from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the 100 block of NW 8th Avenue.
City of Gainesville officials will unveil new street signs for 8th Avenue in memory of the late local civil rights leader, Charles S. Chestnut III, during a ceremony at 8 a.m.
Gainesville City Commissioners voted Thursday to dual name the portion of NW 8th Avenue between NW 6th Street and Waldo Road after Chestnut, who died Dec. 4 at age 83. Chestnut was the spouse of current City Commissioner Cynthia Moore Chestnut and was a former Alachua County Commissioner and the first black member elected to the Alachua County School Board.
That certainly didn’t take long. A week since he passed and already has a roadway named after him.
Next time a soldier from Gainesville comes home in a flag cover casket, maybe the powers that be can name a roadway after him so quickly.
Don’t hold your breath.
Not every soldier who comes home in a casket is deserving of having a road named after them anymore than a civic leader – black, white or any other color; deserving of having something named after them.
What amazes me is how quickly a road sign depicting his name was made. Takes longer than that to fill a pothole or fix a sidewalk.
SO DESERVING
