Trenton man charged with stealing laptop from employer

Staff report

HIGH SPRINGS, Fla. – Keith Eric Benson, 46, of Trenton, has been charged with grand theft after allegedly stealing a laptop from his High Springs employer.

A High Springs Police Department (HSPD) Officer reported that a manager at Theme Works asked the police department to press charges against Benson after they discovered on February 2 that the laptop was missing. The company’s IT provider reported that the laptop’s IP address came back to an internet service in the Trenton area, and the last time the laptop was powered on, its username had been changed to “Benson.”

The company’s IT provider also checked the login address for Benson’s work email on his phone, and that reportedly showed the same IP address as the laptop.

A HSPD Detective submitted a subpoena to find the physical address associated with the IP address, and the address provided by the internet service was reportedly Benson’s home address.

An officer and a detective spoke with Benson at Theme Works, and post Miranda, Benson reportedly declined to make any statements, but when the detective said he would try to locate the laptop, Benson reportedly stated spontaneously that the laptop was not at his residence. The arrest report does not provide any more information about whether the laptop was located.

Benson has been charged with grand theft. He has two felony convictions and one misdemeanor conviction. Judge Susan Miller-Jones set bail at $5,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • Terminated for cause. What a shame…..please apply for another job with the city of Gainesville. They seem to be OK with ‘stealing’ over there…..as they have been doing it to me for years every time I get a GRU bill.

  • So a little search reveals this POS was arrested for attempted kidnapping in 2003 of a 10 year old girl in Newberry. Plus a aggravated stalking charge in relation to that. 5 years of sex offender probation and Domestic Violence arrests. Now a thief. I wonder if Themes Works who does work with Disney and Seaworld did a proper criminal background check on him or ignored it. Themes Work is across the street from Tumblemania that has a lot of young girls. Businesses need to do better on who they are hiring.
