Tropical Storm Helene Update #7- Storm forecast
Press release from Alachua County
ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Tropical Storm Helene is intensifying and expected to become a major hurricane as it nears Florida. The storm is forecast to strengthen into at least a Category 3 hurricane, with landfall anticipated in the Big Bend region by late Thursday. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns of life-threatening storm surges, heavy rainfall, and strong winds across Florida.
Local authorities advise finalizing preparations by Thursday morning, as Helene’s outer bands could begin affecting the area shortly thereafter. We expect storm impacts from Thursday afternoon into early Friday morning. Be aware that small changes in the track can dramatically change the forecast.
In Alachua County, significant impacts are expected. Torrential rains are forecast to bring 3 to 6 inches of precipitation. This will lead to a heightened risk of flash flooding in urban and low-lying areas, particularly around local rivers and streams.
The NHC also cautions that strong wind gusts from Helene’s outer bands could down trees and power lines, causing widespread power outages and travel disruptions. In western Alachua County, prepare for sustained winds of 58 to 73 mph with hurricane-strength gusts possible. In eastern Alachua County, prepare for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph with gusts up to 58 to 73 mph.
Emergency services in Alachua County are already preparing for the storm’s impacts. While storm surge will primarily affect coastal areas, inland flooding and wind damage remain serious concerns. Residents are encouraged to secure property, stay informed about changing conditions, and follow evacuation guidelines if necessary.
With widespread impacts forecast throughout Florida, including Alachua County, residents should stay alert to weather updates and prepare for potential disruptions in the coming days.
To aid our residents as the storm approaches, Alachua County has activated the 311 Emergency Information Line (352-264-6557 if 311 is unavailable in your area). This is for questions and rumor control. If you have an actual emergency, call 911.
