Two pets deceased, several occupants displaced in Woodside Villas fire

Staff report from Alachua County Fire Rescue press release

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Two pets succumbed to smoke inhalation and several occupants were displaced as a result of a Sunday night fire at Woodside Villas Apartments.

At about 7:45 p.m. on June 14, crews from Alachua County Fire Rescue and Gainesville Fire Rescue responded to a residential structure fire at Woodside Villas Apartments in southwest Gainesville. Crews quickly deployed attack lines and extinguished the fire, limiting it to the apartment of origin. Several occupants were displaced, however, due to significant smoke travel that was unavoidable due to the building’s general construction.

Crews completed extensive ventilation of multiple units and conducted salvage and overhaul operations in the affected apartments. No one was injured as a result of the fire, but two of the family’s pets succumbed to smoke inhalation injuries prior to the fire crews’ arrival.

Multiple deputies from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office assisted with evacuating residents in conjunction with the initial fire attack. The American Red Cross was notified and contacted the displaced residents to assist with immediate needs.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Alachua County Fire Marshal.

Alachua County Fire Rescue would like to remind residents to regularly check your smoke detectors to ensure they are in working order and have an emergency evacuation plan for all family members and pets in your home.
