GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Partnership was the theme of the day as leaders from UF Health, the city of Gainesville, and Alachua County gathered Wednesday to mark the opening of the UF Health Urgent Care Center – Eastside with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The project, which came about through a collaboration between UF Health, the City of Gainesville, and Alachua County, will expand access to quality healthcare for residents of Gainesville’s east side.

“This urgent care center is local to this community, joining our UF Health Family Medicine – Eastside practice on Waldo Road in bringing the excellence of UF Health’s medical expertise conveniently close to home – for our elders, for our young families, and for the vulnerable members of our community who have difficulty accessing quality healthcare,” said Steve Motew, M.D., M.H.A., FACS, president and system CEO of the UF Health clinical enterprise.

The urgent care center boasts 9,000 square feet equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, including eight examination rooms, two procedure rooms, an X-ray area, laboratory services, and a community room available for meetings and gatherings. The center will be open seven days a week, with extended weekday evening hours.

“The County Commission is very proud to be part of this project. We think of this as serving East Gainesville, but this is going to serve all of eastern Alachua County,” said Alachua County Commission Chair Mary Alford. “I really appreciate the partnership — and there again I said that word — the partnership that we’ve had with UF Health and the partnership that we’ve had with the City of Gainesville.”

Gainesville and Alachua County each contributed $2.25 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, a COVID-19 stimulus relief package, to help build the center. UF Health will be responsible for the center’s ongoing operations. UF Health and local leaders say they hope the area around Southeast Hawthorne Road and Southeast 20th Street will become a medical and retail hub for one of the city’s historically underserved areas.

Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward noted how the center was built with the community in mind.

“You were part of the process getting it built,” Ward said. “You sat in the auditorium at Lincoln Middle School and forced City and County leaders, and UF Health leaders, to take you seriously and build this the way you needed it to be built. That’s why there’s a community room right here. That’s why there are multiple exam rooms. That’s why there’s an X-ray room here. There is technology here that most facilities like this just don’t have… because the community said, ‘This is necessary.’”

Other speakers included Gailine McCaslin, assistant director for strategic operations at UF Health and administrator for the urgent care center; Marvin Dewar, M.D., J.D., CEO of UF Health Physicians; and Ken Cornell, the Alachua County Commission’s District 4 Commissioner.

UF Health Urgent Care Center – Eastside opens its doors to the public on Thursday.

  • Not saying I’m hoping it’s needed, but I am thankful it’s open in time for the weekend festivities.

I also wish the best for the safety and security of those who provide their skill and dedication to helping others as well as those who are unfortunate to find themselves in need of such care.

    • Cutting that ribbon is the most physical work I have done years. I am famished I need to head to the donut buffet.

  • A community room for neighborhood gatherings? That’s an interesting new concept/addition to the ER. I hope they use it for educational outreach seminars on safe sex and other topics which could benefit the local community, and other events of that nature.

    • Hey Guest when does the rescuing start? Is it over already? The hypocrisy is in the bill you site American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. It is now 2024. Uhm, is Kamala bringing the rescue or just punch and pie?

      • Given that inflation just hit a 3 year low and the stock market broke $40 trillion this week while the Bank of America announced they no longer project a recession, yes, we have just about come down from the economic challenge of Covid which affected the world’s economy, not the US’s alone.

        • Wow a 3 year low after a 30 year high thanks for nothing. Buffett just sold off 4 billion in B&A stock because they have such a bright future. BOJ did a .25 bps and crashed the Nikkei 26% breaking the yen carry trade. Good times!

          • Thank covid – it happened world wide – and Trump who pretended it was going away in a month and ended with a net loss of jobs for his presidency – 1st since Hoover – and a negative GDP growth.

Of course this unpleasant history has no bearing on the hypocrisy of Kat who’s there in that photo acting like she had something to do with the new ER when she tried to kill it.

          • jazzman meaning your sharp as a tack while you fill your adult diaper or pretending the cackler has a brain! oh hypocrisy blow thy horn! 10% for the Big Guy!

      • Please look at the GNV Sun classified adds where Request for Proposals by small local governments, Otter Creek, Dixie Co., Hamilton Co,….appear daily, infrastructure stuff that matters and benefits citizens.
Cammack showing up at ribbon cutting ceremony after doing everything she could to stop the bill tells you what type of person she is. We can do better!

        • infrastructure stuff? Is that like shovel ready Jobs? Road Map Joe was in charge of that too! Fuel taxes are supposed to pay for roads and bridges but they sent that money over to Ukraine i guess. Cammack was smart to vote against this and even smarter for getting us some of the money Kamala is spending since our children are going to have to pay the bill.

          • Say what?
“Cammack was smart to vote against this and even smarter for getting us some of the money”
The disconnect from reality in the MAGA brain is shocking.
Vote AGAINST the money and then praise her for bringing the federal pork back to her district?
Where is that MAGA giant size facepalm emoji?

          • the reality is shocking everyone at the gas pump, the grocery store, the rent check and at your ignorance pork rind!
She didn’t vote for it but Joe and Kamala are still going to spend it on new wars and future engineers! so it was right of Kat to get some of the money for us before It goes to Ukraine.
            Math is hard!

          • “Trump added $8.4 trillion to the national debt

Tax cuts and pandemic relief measures enacted during the Trump administration added $8.4 trillion to the national debt over the 10-year budget window, according to a study released Wednesday by a top budget watchdog group.

Discretionary spending increases from 2018 and 2019 added $2.1 trillion, Trump’s signature Tax Cuts and Jobs Act added $1.9 trillion and the 2020 bipartisan CARES Act for pandemic relief added another $1.9 trillion, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB), a Washington think tank, found in a study released earlier this month.”

          • Jazzman you cashed them Trump
checks didn’t you? Tell the truth! Knowing how righteous you are you probably donated your Trump checks to the poors! Am i right?

        • Guest, note fiberoptic going up in Gilchrist county and all over redneckville because of Biden and the democrats. Kat ran on bringing broadband to the yahoos but voted against it. Biden and the democrats are doing the stuff to help counties red and blue while Trump – the guy known for not paying the sheetrock hangers – pretends he’s for the little guys. Meanwhile he’s making deals with Musk, Oil execs, and silicon valley moguls to cut their taxes again and leave them alone on bitcoin and AI if they’ll give him billions.

Wake the hell up! You’re being conned by a guy who would never let you in his house or pee on you if you were on fire.

          • “Poor kids are just as bright and talented as white kids, wealthy kids, black kids, asian kids!” -Joe Biden

“Right now, we have young black kids growing up in the Bronx who don’t even know what the word ‘computer’ is. They don’t know these things!” – Governor Kathy
            Hochul

“they’re excellent swimmers!” – mayor eric adams

I think you need some new idols Jazzman

          • Trump University founder yesterday, equating big Trump donors with Congressional Medal of Honor winners:

“Trump was introduced by Miriam Adelson, a wealthy Republican donor and widow of Sheldon Adelson, who pumped millions of dollars of his own money into electing Republican candidates. He died in 2021.

“I watched Sheldon sitting so proud in the White House when we gave Miriam the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” Trump said at his New Jersey resort.

“That’s the highest award you can get as a civilian. It’s the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor,” Trump continued, referring to the highest military honor bestowed for valor in combat. The Medal of Honor is often mistakenly called the Congressional Medal of Honor.

“But civilian version, it’s actually much better because everyone [who] gets the Congressional Medal of Honor, they’re soldiers. They’re either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets or they’re dead,” Trump concluded. “She gets it, and she’s a healthy, beautiful woman, and they’re rated equal,..”

        • DeSantis pulls the same stuff and then like Kat starts almost ever press conference or policy roll out with a blast of our and his president, the one who shows up in Florida with the check for hurricanes and collapsed condos, even though the state didn’t vote for him. That is not what governors, representatives, and statesmen do. They work with other officials chosen by the people, respectfully and with the general good in mind, you know, like Biden does. These 2 are the worst.

          • My my my Jazzman the sunshine state didnt vote for Desantis? You must be an election denier! Florida is Destanisland so choke on it!

          • I didn’t say that – learn to read. I said Florida didn’t vote for Biden, yet he shows up when needed with checks and doesn’t spend anytime blasting punks like DeSantis and Kat.

          • Your grammar contains so much diatribe as to be incoherent but i try just because you seem to need help.

    • Good post – Kat is not only dead weight who has produced nothing while in the House except hot air, but she also gets in front of parades she tried to stop, and all in service not to her constituents, but to cult figure Trump and his cult organization, the GOP. She is a complete phony.

      • dead weight? Joe is brain dead and Kamala is an empty head!
Cult? The Gop had primaries and picked Trump. The Dnc had primaries and picked Joe but democracy got in the way so tptb installed Kamala. Cult? The Dnc wouldn’t let a Kennedy run in their primaries but republicans are a cult. “Folks ask me Joe, you say we gotta spend money to keep from going broke and I say yes!” – Joe Biden

        • If the GOP was smart enough to remove their incompetent candidate for president they would have to follow similar procedure, though they’ve already had their convention, and the democrats have not. Virtually all the DNC delegates have now pledged to her and she will be the legal candidate, selected by the elected representatives of the party. It’s perfectly legal, fair, and like that other representative democracy, the US government.

By the way, you’re a cult because you worship a record setting liar, creep, and low life. No other candidate in history that I remember has had people flying flags everywhere with his name on it or had posters of Fatso’s head photoshopped on a young shirtless buff body shooting an AR15 like he was an action hero. This is sick – no worse, weird!

If you cannot detect the obvious fact that he is a shallow transparent con man who cannot be believed about anything, there is something wrong with you and your ability to relate socially to other humans. My long gone highly moral Republican mother would have thrown him out of our house if he or someone like him ever darkened the door.

          • Blah blah blah democracy! I don’t believe your mother was a republican or moral or even liked Jazz.

          • I think you were done a few comments before this one. Too bad you didn’t realize it.

  • I guess the UF Health Family Medicine – Eastside facility, at 410 NE Waldo Rd, is too busy and they needed to open a twin 2 miles away.

    • One is a walk-in urgent care (similar to care spot) and the other is a family practice clinic which require appointments where primary care docs reside, so two different things.

  • “local leaders say they hope the area around Southeast Hawthorne Road and Southeast 20th Street will become a. . .retail hub for one of the city’s historically underserved areas.”
We got to elect some more intelligent ‘leaders’ cuz this crew is clueless.
“Underserved” is a DEI PC approved way to say “poor.” As in “poor people do not have money.”
“Retail” is a function of free market capitalism, where people build stores to offer goods and services in exchange for money. People are free to choose the location of stores they build, such as in areas where locals have money to spend. Google “the upscale shoppers of the high class development of Celebration Pointe.”
Unless the government offers tax money subsidies to these businesses to locate in this area, “retail” will not build in the “underserved” area because, being smarter than our local “leaders”, they notice the simple economic fact that “poor people do not have money to spend in a retail store” and it is a stupid place to build a store.
    Duh.

    • There have been repeated attempts to subsidize the development of east Gainesville, but ultimately these businesses need to appeal to the broader county population or even the yuppies on the west side if they want to make it work.

Oftentimes the economic incentives are being gated by outdated numbers too. I worked on a couple houses being offered only to sufficiently “disadvantaged” people in southeast Gainesville and they were 400k+ just like many of the expensive houses in “southwest gainesville” aka jonesville.

  • Anyone notice how many urgent care centers popped up in the last few years????

I really wonder what the business model is…

Primary doctors was the original way…

Now it’s a pain In the ass to get a primary doctor, or to get a decent appointment date…..
    Its made difficult by design..

The poof…. Let’s make it convenient… Urgent cares popping up like dollar generals.
