GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Samuel Alexander Gold, 20, was arrested today for allegedly throwing a basketball rim over a fence during a fraternity party on October 4, seriously injuring a victim on the other side of the fence.

According to the responding University of Florida Police Department (UFPD) officer, at about 2 p.m. on October 4, during a game-day event in the back yard of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, Gold allegedly threw an 11.5-pound broken metal basketball rim over an eight-foot privacy fence into the back yard of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, which was also holding a game-day event.

The rim reportedly hit the victim in the head, causing a laceration that required seven staples.

In a post-Miranda interview today at the UFPD Headquarters, Gold reportedly admitted he had been intoxicated and had thrown the basketball rim over the fence at the suggestion of another fraternity member. He said he was unaware that the basketball rim had hit anyone.

Gold has been charged with aggravated battery causing bodily harm, a felony. He has no criminal history, and Judge Jonathan Ramsey ordered him released on his own recognizance.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

  • This man is certainly not the sharpest knife in the drawer (but)- I’m sure mommy and daddy are supportive of their little boy and their Mastercard will hire the best to help him get out and on his way.Greek life – so overrated.

  • Gold’s criminal defense attorney checking in here… in what world does my client’s charge of aggravated battery meet the statutory requirement that there be INTENT behind what he did? Meaning my client intended to batter the injured person on the other side of the fence using an object. My client could not see over the fence, had no idea that anyone was over there, nor did he intend to injure the other party. I move to dismiss the charge, and refer to student conduct at uf instead.

    • You must be doing this pro bono if your best efforts are in a paper. Save it for the courthouse, dude.(PS: Bet he’s crying like a baby since the assault!).

  • JustSayNo, why are you choosing to deliberate your case in the comment section of the Alachua County Chronicle…on the webpage for your clients own arrest? I think if anything, it makes it look worse. Where’s that dude that always makes comments about public defenders?
