UFPD and ASO CCC welcome comments as part of accreditation process

Staff report

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Both the University of Florida Police Department (UFPD) and Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Combined Communications Center (CCC) will be conducting on-site assessments by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) at the end of the month.

Initially accredited in 1996, UFPD is seeking to maintain its accreditation with CALEA, whose process is to provide UFPD with valuable information to support the agency’s continuous improvement and align UFPD practices with nationwide best practices for law enforcement.

CCC was first accredited by CALEA in 2002 and was reaccredited for the third consecutive time in March 2011. In 2008 and 2011, the CCC received the distinguished “Flagship Award” from CALEA, awarded only to the most successful CALEA-accredited agencies in recognition of their achievements and expertise. In March 2014, the CCC achieved its inaugural Gold Standard Award, which emphasizes processes and outcomes. The most recent assessment took place in October 2020, resulting in a seventh reaccreditation in March 2021.

As part of CALEA’s accreditation process, the public is welcome to provide comments, commendations, and other feedback about the quality of the agencies’ services in compliance with CALEA standards and overall candidacy for accredited status.

For UFPD, the public can leave comments on the UFPD Transparency page or go directly to the CALEA comments portal.

For the CCC, the public can call 352-264-6696 or use the CALEA comments portal; a copy of the standards can be obtained by calling 352-382-3030.

CALEA is not an investigatory body, and members of the public should not submit information for such purposes. Comments will be considered in context to their relevancy to FDLE’s compliance with the standards and tenets of CALEA accreditation.  CALEA maintains the Public Comments Portal, and the feedback provided goes straight to CALEA.

  • “For UFPD, the public can leave comments on the UFPD Transparency page or go directly to the CALEA comments portal. For the CCC, the public can call 352-264-6696…”

This is odd…UF provides a working link to their CALEA.org comment portal while Alachua County gives us a local phone number with no voicemail even setup to call. This is the first paragraph on UF’s CALEA.org comment portal “The purpose of this public portal is to receive comments regarding an agency’s compliance with CALEA standards.”

The county/aso needs to take notes from the state re: transparency and feedback. Our local governments have major issues with transparency and constructive criticism…

      Public Comment Portal
CALEA has a public comment portal to receive comments regarding our agency’s compliance with CALEA accreditation standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services and overall candidacy for accredited status. If you would like to leave commendations or concerns, please use this link to do so. https://cimrs2.calea.org/

The intent of the accreditation feedback process is to gather information to provide the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office with support needed for continuous improvement and foster the pursuit of professional excellence. [PSCAP 2.6.8]

      • Many thanks! It looked like ASO was starting to follow the recent practices of the city and county…that’s where I was coming from.

And I doubt this article left out that information…I bet they printed what they were given by each agency

      • That information is not in the public announcement ASO posted on Facebook, which is where I got this info. I requested the CALEA link from ASO today and have not yet received it. Thanks for posting the info!

        • The sheriffs office sheepishly and ironically responded under ‘Alachua Citizen” handle. Damn near everything is inverted now!

          • Never said you did. It isn’t about who signs your individual paycheck. It’s about who you are representing. I’m sure ASO contracts out a lot of work to private companies.

    • Downvoters…please correct me if I’m wrong. I read the article, visited UF’s link and called ASO’s number. I’m just reporting the differences and noting how local govts make it difficult for citizens to get involved. It’s been a local problem for several years now.

  • Did the incident involving UPD officers having their personal firearms stolen from their unlocked personal vehicles come up?

    • This article is just a notice to citizens about the upcoming assessments. I assume the point being is to allow citizens time to provide comments and feedback. The CALEA portals (UF link in article, ASO link in comments) are setup to receive comments like yours above. If it concerns you or if you’re elated by it, I’d recommend submitting it.
