Update on I-75 chemical spill

Press release from Alachua County Fire Rescue

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Due to the spillage of a toxic chemical at yesterday’s I-75 crash scene, Alachua County is coordinating with the State Department of Health in Alachua County to test the drinking wells of the three closest residences to the FDOT retention pond.

Also, a remediation company is pulling at least three water samples from the FDOT retention pond to check for any organic vapor levels to assess and determine if any styrene is present.

If any styrene is confirmed in the FDOT retention pond, vacuum trucks will remove the product from the water’s surface for proper disposal.

The soils of the crash site, interstate ditches, and retention pond will also be assessed for all potential contamination from this incident. All contaminated soil will be properly excavated and disposed of in accordance with County, State, and Federal regulations and to FDEP clean-up target levels.

  • These trucks carrying deadly chemicals should be painted bright red or yellow to warn other vehicles to stay away. Or ship via rail. Too many idiot drivers on the interstate highways.

    • I agree but they do have hazmat placards on the trailers, and if you point them out with bright color, it makes them targets for other idiots. Also idiot drivers are going to be idiot drivers even if they are painted a bright color.
I can’t tell you how many times lately we have almost been hit by numbnuts driving super fast weaving in traffic on the highway. Makes me wish I had a James Bond car
