Urban Search and Rescue Team returns from deployment
Press release from Gainesville Fire Rescue
ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – On Wednesday, August 30, after Hurricane Idalia made its way through Northern Florida, Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR) mobilized an eight-person team as part of Florida Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Task Force – Eight (TF-8). FL TF-8 is a 27-member team comprised of USAR specialists from Ocala Fire Rescue (8), Marion County Fire Rescue (10), Gainesville Fire Rescue (8), and a chaplain.
During their deployment, GFR members and their TF-8 team conducted Search and Rescue operations, Damage Assessments of structures, and Targeted Searches for citizens requiring assistance. The team conducted operations in Keaton Beach, Taylor County, Dixie County, Lafayette County, and areas along the Suwannee River, in Suwannee County.
After six days of deployment that included search missions through flooded streets and dry terrain covered in debris, the members of FL TF-8 returned home Monday evening. Gainesville Fire Rescue wishes to extend a special thank you to all who deployed and a warm welcome to those returning home safely.
Upon their return, Chief Dixon offered words on behalf of Mayor Ward, City Manager Curry, and the entire Gainesville community: “Thank you for working tirelessly to alleviate the devastation Hurricane Idalia left behind. Your selflessness embodied the core values of the fire service and helped to ease the pain felt by others during these trying times.”
Thank you USAR!
