Virtual town hall to focus on RTS, Vision Zero, and infrastructure surtax projects

Press release from City of Gainesville
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gainesville City Commissioner Casey Willits (District 3) will host a one-hour virtual town hall meeting for neighbors about the City’s Regional Transit System (RTS), Vision Zero initiative, and Streets, Stations and Strong Foundations (SSSF) projects. He will be joined by staff to answer questions from area neighbors.
The event is free but advance registration is required if you would like to ask a question (questions posted on Facebook will not be answered). Registrants will receive a dedicated Zoom link for the virtual town hall prior to the event. Registration will remain open during the event.
When: 6-7 p.m. Wed., April 24
Where: Online. Registration is required to ask a question and is available through this link.
Spanish speakers who have questions about the topics to be discussed are asked to enter their questions into the online registration form. Each will receive a reply in Spanish following the event.
RTS has served the Gainesville area as its public transit system for 50 years. A proposed reduction in funding by the University of Florida, beginning July 1, would impact bus service on campus as well as on additional routes serving students, faculty, and staff.
The City Commission adopted a Vision Zero policy in 2018 with the goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries to pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists by 2040. The Vision Zero plan prioritizes safety for all roadway users, guides transportation planning efforts, and focuses capital investments.
SSSF refers to the City’s capital projects funded by the one-cent infrastructure surtax approved by Alachua County voters in November 2022. During the next 10 years, 50 percent of the surtax proceeds are dedicated to road repair, public-safety buildings, and land for affordable housing.
The virtual town hall will be broadcast on Cox Cable Channel 12, livestreamed on the City’s website and Facebook page, and archived online. It also will be streamed on GNV TV through Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices.
Please note that questions posted as Facebook comments during the livestream will not be answered. Neighbors who have questions should register online where they can submit their questions on the registration form.
Literal BS in a virtual world. The so called “Vision Zero” sounds appropriate for this group.
The “real” questions will be screened and not permitted…a la Biden’s press ops.
The rest of Willet the Weasel’s answers will be propaganda and intentional deflection of the issues facing Gainesville.
Curated and pre-screened like Dems love to do, for show.
Where is District 3? Must be a great safe place to live, as gun violence is not even a top three issue for folks living there.
How to cut the over bloated city staff with no GRU free money is also not a big concern. What a beautiful place District 3 is.
I wanna move there.
