Staff report

NEWBERRY, Fla. – A Washington man was seriously injured this morning in a crash with a school bus transporting students on the first day of school.

According to a release from the Florida Highway Patrol, at 8:28 a.m. today, an Alachua County Public Schools bus driven by a 61-year-old Fanning Springs woman was traveling northbound on County Road 241 and entered the intersection with W. Newberry Road. A pickup truck driven by a 68-year-old man from Port Angeles, Washington, was traveling westbound on W. Newberry Road and entered the intersection with County Road 241 just as the bus entered the intersection, resulting in a crash.

The Washington man was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The seven students on the bus were not injured, and the driver was not injured. A bus aide sustained minor injuries. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

  • aw, rats, on the first day of school? What a bummer for everyone whose day got thrown off because of that! And, prayers for a speedy recovery for all that were injured.

  • Interesting to see who ran that red light.
8:28 a.m. is pretty busy time for that area. Traveling east to west shouldn’t have impaired the pickup driver’s vision. Difficult to tell which vehicle made the initial impact from the pics so hopefully there’s a witness or two who will be able to shed some light.
Glad the children & bus driver are okay and hopefully the driver of the pickup recovers soon.

  • You guys got the wrong intersection listed. The crash occurred at Newberry road and 170th street, not at cr241. None the less both intersections have high crash rates however visibility is a little better at 170th.

    • The south side of the intersection is called CR 241S and 170th ST, the north part is just 170th ST. The northern section of CR 241 is at 143rd ST

      • Indeed I stand half corrected. The ‘same’ road 1.64 miles apart. Who thought that was a good idea.

  • I’m betting driver of the truck was correct…..based upon how I see some of these buses being driven. Let’s see.
