When will that terrible road get paved?

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Alachua County has published an interactive map showing its planned roadway projects for the next 10 years (note that this plan only covers roads maintained by the County, not State roads or roads maintained by cities).

Thank you so much for this information. Alachua Chronicle rocks!
Thanks! Jennifer, this is excellent work.
I don’t see the intersection of main and 53rd anywhere on the list. Worst piece of road in the county.
🤣
2027 if correct
2024 first item. Waldo Rd to 13th St.
I’m pretty sure it’ll be included in this 2024 Project. SR 24 is Waldo Road.
[NE/NW 53rd Avenue from SR 24 to U.S. 441 – major rehab, $7.5 million]
Agreed! I’ve been e-mailing the county about it since 2015. I take that road every day to work. After my first realignment and two new tires I had to have done on my car I quit turning left at the intersection (westbound). 15th isn’t much better but hopefully that too will be included in what looks to be 2024.
Highest property tax in florida, cant even fix the roads. Laughable
Alachua County is one of the few counties that use property tax for road maintenance. This year $8 million was budgeted.
Remember that Alachua County is responsible for only one part of your property tax bill.
The countywide millage rate ranks 41st (1 being the lowest and 67 the highest).
Statewide, the average resident pays $784 in county property taxes. In Alachua County, the average is $613, making Alachua County the 31st property tax per capita in the state.
Alachua County is also one of the few counties that spends gas tax revenue on salaries instead of roads.
Alachua County is also one of few counties where new growth gets subsidized by existing taxpayers.

….
Alachua County is the only county that employs a lying sack-of-you-know-what public works director named Ramon Gavarrete.
You oughta back that up with verifiable facts. Or not say it.
Wow. Talk about news you can use. This is great reporting!
2023 is almost over but NW 23rd Ave is supposedly being “major revamped” with bike lanes… are they waiting for climate friendly asphalt from California?
I don’t see why they are repaving 225 by the raceway. That road is as smooth as glass.
Thanks, Jennifer, for this excellent summary of the 10-year plan. While this challenge has been decades in the making and will take decades to fix, the voter passage of the Wild Spaces & Public Places 10-year surtax gives public works the funding needed to make good progress.
Yes, decades of county government administrations have seen fit to fund other priorities … such as the ten years to end homelessness plan.
Thankfully, single member districts and improved information available through outlets such as the Chronicle seem to be focusing the commissioners’ attention more toward the will of the voters in their respective districts instead of the projects desired by the greenprogressive constituency that previously effectively elected all of them.
Here is an interview with Ramon Gavarrete discussing the pavement management plan: https://youtu.be/q2RzQHBWhWM?si=J6wmGen-QpXkYaq5
AC, since you are apparently some sort of official mouthpiece for the county, please explain the justification for placing the improvement of SW 46th Blvd ahead of other projects.
The sad part here is that it will take 10 years. All of those roads need it now. A PRIMARY responsibility of the county commission. By the time 2034 rolls around, many more than these (and some of them too) will be in dire need of complete rebuilding.
There is always a 10 year plan, this is not something new. There are also lists of new projects ranked by need, some of them way out on the horizon. Thanks to Jennifer for printing this, but this info is public and available from the MTPO (Metro. Transportation Planning Organization, which is the combined city and county commissions) and North Central Florida Regional Planning Council which provides staff. The MTPO and it’s citizen’s advisory committee have public meetings which you can attend and speak at.
We understand the frustration built up about roads, and this Commission has taken an important step. Maintaining transportation infrastructure is a problem nationwide. In the 1980s, the state turned over two hundred miles of roads to Alachua County without providing adequate funding to maintain them. That was the start of the County’s backlog issues. In counties across Florida, general fund dollars are strained to cover mandated services such as Law enforcement, jails, Fire/rescue, and social services, to name a few. The tool that the state gives Counties to pay for the massive costs of road projects is the infrastructure sales tax that voters must approve. Many Florida counties have successfully passed the tax. Voters in Alachua County have voted no three times on transportation ballot initiatives. In 2022, our current County Commissioners had the courage to expand the very successful Wild Spaces Public Places program into an omnibus Ballot initiative that included funding for road improvements, land conservation, parks and recreation, and affordable housing. The voters passed the surtax in November of 2022. This will allow us to make significant progress over the 10-year surtax period.
The state also turned over hundreds of miles of roads to many – if not all -counties in Florida.
Why are Alachua County’s roads worse than just about anywhere in the state?
This is a failed talking point that needs further investigation.
The counties with the best roads are typically the Counties that have had the surtax for some time. Marion County is a good example. To be fair, many Florida counties and counties and cities nationwide are struggling with infrastructure issues.
I appreciate your responses. I think the roads, overall, are in good shape, especially compared to many other areas of the country, which I have seen a fair amount of.
No one with a properly functioning brain trusts the degenerates in blue county government to be responsible with taxpayer money. You know the difference between Marion county and alachua county correct? You people piss away our money on your pet projects the help a minority of citizens, most of which pay very little taxes without other peoples taxes subsidizing their taxes.
Then you have the road from tower leading into Haile plantation that is not bad at ALL and is traveled by few but because lily white rich leftists live in Haile, you piss away money on that road.
Meanwhile county road 235A has been a disaster for 30 years and will be for another 5 thanks to the bought and paid for thugs in Alachua County government that only care about the poor and the rich, they give all of us in between the middle finger which is exactly why we give the middle finger right back to you! You people get what you give!
They voted down the measure because y’all wanted to tie our roads to handing more of our money to developers sucking the UF out of state student money (IE serving rich people who pay no taxes here)
In the view of some, a significant component of the three initiatives’ failure was a lack of trust that the money would actually be used to fix the roads.
Citizens may have felt they were given a choice between A) the county takes more taxes and doesn’t fix the roads and B) the county doesn’t fix the roads.
Who took over Main Street by request thereby contributing to that abortion? Better yet, who requested it?
Whew, if only I could push that 2028 235A reconstruction up to 2024. Nonetheless, this is great information. Thanks so much for reporting.
Finally, N W 23rd, is going to get some badly needed work done on it.
How much does the county get from the gasoline tax that was added years ago to be mandated for roads? Think it started at 5 cents per gallon. Can you imagine how many gallons of gas are sold in Alachua county every day?
I think it is twenty-six-point-something cents per gallon for gas, twenty-point-something for diesel
Great information but that graphic is hilariously bad.
“When will that terrible road get paved?”
Answer: When liberals get a clue….or…when hell freezes over.
When are they going to 4-lane Archer Road from Archer into Gainesville?
That is a State Road.
When will NW 98 St between 39 Ave and Newbery Rd be and Tower Rd 4 laned ? With all the Apts and housing going up it’s beyond obvious this is needed.
Did you forget about 94th.ave between 235 and sr45.
Yeah, they patched the holes on part of it a couple of years ago, but didn’t go all the way to SR-45. Go figure…
NW 23rd Avenue from NW 58th Blvd to I-75 is on the list for 2023 but there is no indication that this work has or will begin and 2023 is nearly over.
Excellent point. I wonder if “Alachua County” would please answer that question for us… Maybe they will at least start putting out a few token orange barrels or a digital sign warning people that they will need to plan for delays, or plan to detour before the end of December? This road has a multi-use path along the south side, thankfully. (The paved path is also in terrible shape, like the actual road is, and has been that way for at least 15 years.) NW 23rd Ave. is one of two main artery roads leading to our highly recognized Santa Fe College, (https://www.sfcollege.edu/number-one/ )yet it is one of the most pot hole marred rough roads in the county… Pretty embarrassing… I hope they really fix it soon.
When is 75th St SW from Archer Road to SW 75th Way, and 85th Ave SW from 75th St SW to SR 121 (SW Williston Road) going to be repaved, repaired, or anything to fill the potholes and deteriorated shoulders? No mention of these high traffic roads anywhere in the grand plan!
Crickets!
75th St SW Pothole to AC BOCC: How is your road maintenance planning going? I think you missed me?
What they (AC Road Repair) did last summer was put sand in the potholes! Really? Sand? Yes, they sure did!
CR 337 is one of the worst roads in the county, how can it possibly be pushed out to 2030?
